Music Review: Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now"

Thompson Twins

Hold Me Now
Album: Side Kicks
Year: 1983

Tom Bailey tries to repair a damaged relationship with his girlfriend in the sensitive "Hold Me Now."

A disheartened piano and subtle percussion open the single, creating an contemplative tone. Bailey glances at a photo of them together taken some years ago. They are looking into each other's eyes and in awe of one another. It was a blissful time, which didn't seem to exist. It has become an illusion. Now, they quarrel over every small issue and nitpick at each other's habits constantly. They are in love with hurting and pain. "I have a picture pinned to my wall/An image of you and of me and we're laughing/With love at it all/But look at our life now, we're tattered and torn/We fuss and we fight and delight in the tears/That we cry until dawn."

In the chorus, Bailey asks her to comfort him and remember why they fell in love in the first place. He wants to be with her and start over again. "Hold me now/Warm my heart/
Stay with me/Let lovin' start, let lovin' start."

He recalls an argument they continually have in the second verse. She accuses him of being idealistic. However, he points out she is, too. He acknowledges that their hopes for the future are unrealistic. They both want a life where without conflict. He suggests moving to another continent. But he would still need her. She's an important part of his life. "You say I'm a dreamer, we're two of a kind/Both of us searching for some perfect world we know we'll never find/So perhaps I should leave here, yeah yeah, go far away/But you know that there's nowhere that I'd rather be/Than with you here today."

The chorus is repeated twice. Bailey's "whoa-oh's" to segue into the next verse. The peaceful synthesizers have a brief solo.

His girlfriend doubts his feelings for her. He tells her it's a fact and something she learned a long time ago. He can't stand to see her cry and offers to serenade her. He will apologize although he's not sure how he wronged her. "You ask if I love you, well, what can I say?/You know that I do and that this is just one of those games that we play/So I'll sing you a new song, please don't cry any more/I'll even ask your forgiveness though I don't know just what I'm asking it for."

The second chorus with the addition of new lyrics is sung four times to end the single. "Oh, oh, hold me now (hold me in your lovin' arms)/Oh warm my heart (warm my cold and tired heart)/Stay with me (Ooh stay with me)/Let lovin' start, let lovin' start..."

The classic "Hold Me Now" is memorable for it's chorus. However, it's Bailey's heartbroken vocals that make it worth rediscovering. He's eager to work it out their problems and move past it. He can't even remember how they fell apart anymore.
Thanks to Furry Canary for the lead singer correction. It's appreciated :)

I think I've done this to you before Dusk, and I apologise if I sound nit-picky, but I think you'll find that the Thompson Twins' male vocalist was not Pete Dodd (who he?) but Tom Bailey. (That said, I have a vague memory that the lyrics, in this case at least, were written by Alannah Currie.)

Some times a song just grabs us and does not let go.  As you and Furry are much more aware of the trivia of the music genre, I will just say I loved the song for its energy and message.
