Music Review: Eve & Gwen Stefani "Let Me Blow Ya Mind"

Eve & Gwen Stefani

Let Me Blow Ya Mind
Album: Scorpion
Year: 2001

Eve brushes off her competition in the collected "Let Me Blow Ya Mind."

Chilled beats open the single, creating a peppery tone. Eve grunts "uh, uh, uh, huh" and calls out "yo, yo" to introduce the song. Then, she immediately starts the verse. She tells people in the club to stop drinking for a few minutes and dance to her song. She says her single will be remembered and will be played years its intial popularity. She talks about her makeover. She's changed her hair from red to blonde. She's been asked about it and doesn't see why it's a big deal. She says her single is so good people will be driving faster to match the beat.

In the industry, she sees a lot of men and women who try to be hard and thuggish. It's humorous to her. She notes they will be flashes in the pan while she have career longetivity. Some of her peers are envious of her success. She tells them not to let it bother them otherwise it could be the Tupac-Biggie deaths all over again. She mentions other rappers are involved in side projects which harm their credibility. She tells them their talentless. She points other rappers have gone on to make Hollywood movies which she's not interested in, either. She's only wants to rap. "Drop your glasses, shake your asses/Face screwed up like you having hot flashes/Which one, pick one, this one, classic/Red from blonde, yeah bitch I'm drastic/Why this, why that, lips stop askin'...expressway, hair back, weavin through the traffic/this one strong should be labeled as a hazard...clowns I spot 'em and I can't stop laughin'/Easy come, easy go, E-V gon' be lastin'/Jealousy, let it go, results could be tragic/Some of y'all ain't writin' well, too concerned with fashion/None of you ain't Gizelle, catwalk and imagine/Alotta y'all Hollywood, drama, passed it/Cut bitch, camera off, real shit, blast it."

Gwen Stefani (of No Doubt) sings the chorus. Stefani sticks up for Eve, saying she's been popular for about a year. She's starting to build momentum and intends to maintain it. She worked hard to be a Top 40 rapper. She tells people to be open and impressed by a female. "And if I had to give you more/It's only been a year/Now I got my foot through the door/
And I ain't goin' nowhere/It took awhile to get me in/And I'm gonna take my time/Don't fight that good shit in your ear/Now let me blow ya mind."

In the bridge, Stefani "oohs" while Eve says other rappers are gathering as much money as they can to have people forget her. She blows off people criticisms and says people are trying to sabotage her success by pretending to be aiding it. They wanna bank up, crank up, makes me dizzy/Shank up, haters wanna come after me/You ain't a ganster, prankster, too much to eat/Snakes in my path wanna smile up at me."

In the next verse, she says other rappers are frustrated and cannot keep up with her. She's herself while other people are studio creations. She dares other people in the industry to write with her. She doesn't have a ghostwriter. She's not worried about the sophomore slump and thinks of how she can grab fans away from other popular female rappers. She comments that they are feeling the pressure. "Now while you grittin' your teeth/Frustration baby you gotta breathe/Take alot more that you to get rid of me/You see I do what they can't do, I just do me/
Ain't no stress when it comes to stage, get what you see/Meet me in the lab, pen and pad, don't believe/Huh, sixteens mine, create my own lines...sophomore, I ain't scared, one of a kind/All I do is contemplate ways to make your fans mine/Eyes bloodshot, stressin', chills up your spine/
Huh, sick to your stomach wishing I wrote your rhymes."

In the final verse, Eve takes on a rugged tone. She tells people to dance and the thugs that they have her admiration. She namechecks Dr. Dre the producer of the single and herself. Then, she sees a guy on the floor whom she says will fall in love with her right away. She also namechecks Ruff Ryders, a rap clique (DMX and Jay-Z were the main members.) She's going to dominate the radio "Let your bones crack/Your back pop, I can't stop...Fuck it, thugged out, I respect the cash route/Yeah n****, sex when I mash out, D-R-E/Back track, think back, E-V-E/Do you like that (ooooh), you got to I know you/Had you in a trance first glance from the floor too/Don't believe I'll show you, take you with me/Turn you on, pension gone, give you relief/Put your trust in a bomb when you listen to me...Still stallion, brick house, pile it on/Ryde or Die, bitch, double R, can't crawl/Beware, cuz I crush anything I land on/Me here, ain't no mistake n**** it was planned on."

The chorus is sung once to end the single.

The naive "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" has Eve playing both sides: the hard, real female rapper with commercial success. Her criticisms of other rappers are unfounded. Clothing lines, like reality shows and parts in movies, are career survival. She would later realize this. Around 2003, her music career began to cool and she ventured into movies and clothing lines, the very thing she railed against.

Gwen Stefani is the real reason to catch the single. She meshes well with Dr. Dre's production, giving the single some playfulness and a break from Eve's bravado. Her ability to adapt well to the hip hop genre is the surprise, not Eve's rhymes.
