There is also JoeUser.com I know it's free to Stardock customers/WC subscribers.
Their commercials may seem cheesy, but GoDaddy.com has some very inexpensive hosting packages, and everyone I know who's used them has been happy with the service.

You can also just do a Google search for free web templates. Some host providers also have templates that you can customize to your needs without even having any advanced ewb building tools of your own.

Well the web hosting thing I won't speak to (leaving it for more experienced folks) but as for selling your fiction I can tell you that JU is as good a place as any to host it and have the most folks actually read it. You can copyright anything you put up here (and inpoint of fact putting it up at all constitutes automatic copyrighting) and sell it at your leisure... It is fairly difficult to make sure your stuff is not being plagiarized commercially unless you are tied into a fairly good publishing house though.

The page builder that netfirms provide will probably not be sufficient because the ones hosters provide are usually "wizards" which let you customize pretty much only the text and pictures on the site - the rest they choose for you. Just a thought. I personally don't like frontpage, but I wouldn't be building a site for your needs. I use Yahoo! Sitebuilder - But something to keep in mind is that you can't use their templates unless you use yahoo's web hosting service. I've also heard nominet are good for hosting.

I would suggest GoDaddy. For 9.95 a month they give you allot. You cn install many items by a click of the button and those items are pretty strong.

Mamboserver of which is a website content manager: easily design your webpages and content, have user polls, caleners EVERYTHING
Geeklog: sort of like a website content manager but it is more blog based.
p(L)og: a blog istall that will also allow you to have other blog members


Lots of cool stuff, with themes, and easy install plug-ins.

Also, great community blog sites to go to is JoeUser.com and Modblog.com (I just happen to be an admin on Modblog - http://esourcemagazine.modblog.com - so I look forward to you going there



Anyway, believe me when I say this: GoDaddy is the best when it comes to start-ups and people who just want to learn about web design. Brinkster.com is also very good with a web site builder and great templates so check them out to.

I have been trying to work with that geocities again.. Still can't load Java upgrade. In gets stuck on "preparing to install" I am checking to make sure I have enough memory etc

Microsoft FrontPage Express is a free version of FrontPage (although its a bit outdated) that I use for my site, but I seem to be hand-typing code more often now, as hand-typing can be much more powerful.

I use 1and1.com for my hosting. They are very reasonable prices and are very reliable. They also have a template system for people just starting out.

I hate 1 & 1. Why? Because they put 15 pages of their ad in PC World.

I've used Interland Web Hosting (http://www.interland.net) for the past 5 years for my customers. They have excellent tech support and offer many affordable packages. I do recommend having your own Domain Name purchased (perhaps through Register.com) before going to them, as their (Interland) Domain management tools are a bit weak.

Unfortunately, advertisement is what pays for all your favorite magazines. The cost of subscriptions won't even cover the cost of the paper.

So be glad that businesses advertise in the magazines you like, otherwise they wouldn't exist.

Thanks for replying. I will definitely check it out. I was kinda shocked to see a response for this old article. I went with GoDaddy and haven't finished my website yet. I showed it to a friend of mine and he advised me to redo it. Been travelling since then.

BTW, I thought your blogging tips article was quite good.
