So Far Away
Album: 14 Shades of Grey
Year: 2003
Aaron Lewis, lead singer of Staind, is unnerved by his newfound happiness and realization of lifelong dreams in the restless "So Far Away."
Moody guitars open the single, creating an apprehensive tone. Lewis says his life has changed. He's social and no longer withdrawn from people. He's also open about his emotions, which he once held back. His dreams have come true and he thinks it's an illusion. To see what he pictured in his head is surreal. "This is my life/It's not what it was before/All these feelings I've shared/And these are my dreams/That I'd never lived before."
In the pre-chorus, he believes he must still be asleep. It's not real. "Somebody shake me/'Cause I/I must be sleeping."
In the chorus, he mentions that the sadness and hassle doesn't seem to exist. The hard work which seemed to be doing nothing finally paid off. He learned many things along the way. He's able to make peace with those who screwed him over. He's pleased with who he's become. "Now that we're here/It's so far away/All the struggle we thought was in vain/All the mistakes/One life contained/They all finally start to go away/Now that we're here it's so far away/And I feel like I can face the day I can forgive/And I'm not ashamed to be the person that I am today."
In the second verse, he thought he wouldn't have a chance to feel safe and comfortable in his life. He was frowning for such a long time, he had forgotten what his smile looked like. " These are my words/That I've never said before/I think I'm doing okay/And this is the smile/
That I've never shown before."
After the pre-chorus and chorus, is the bridge. In the bridge, the strings make their cameo appearance and join in with the loud drums and guitars. The strings are used sparingly and can be heard through patches of the other music.
Lewis once again says he thinks his life is a neverending dream. "I'm so afraid of waking/Please don't shake me/Afraid of waking/Please don't shake me."
The chorus ends the single.
The pensive "So Far Away" finds Lewis unsure of how to deal with being content. Happiness in pop music is guaranteed, despite even a dicey situation. Lewis explores the emotion a bit. Although "So Far Away" is closer to cheese than a character study, Lewis does get brownie points for trying to create a layered song.
