This Is Me
Album: It Was All A Dream
Year: 2001
Holly Blake, lead singer of Dream, is discontented that her boyfriend hasn't gotten over his ex-girlfriend's cruelty in the blunt "This Is Me."
In the opening, Dream say the title of the song amid toothsome rhythms. "This is me (this is me...) this is me/Ah... yeah... (this is me) c'mon."
In the first verse, Blake describes his ex, whom she knew. She toyed with him to inflate her self-esteem. Then, she dumped him once she traded up. Blake promises to not to treat him like she did. She'll be loyal. However, he does't trust her and picks a fight with her for no reason. "She stole your heart/Only did it because she could/Chewed you up and swapped you around/That girl never was no good/Baby I will never do that/I'll love you faithfully/But your suspicious mind thinks/I'm gonna repeat her story."
He obsesses over what happened between him and his ex all the time. He's an emotional ruin. As a result, he's nervous and possessive. He believes every girl will turn out be just like ex. Blake reminds him that she's not his ex. "She's making you crazy/Making you a wreck/
Making you follow me/Making me a suspect/You seem to think I'm playing her game/Don't you know her name."
In the chorus, Blake patiently explains that she's not the same. She says she's not the bossy or cheating type. She will help him to learn to trust women again. "That was her, this is me/
We're as different as can be/She and I, we're nothing alike/You're confusing day with night/
That was then, this is now/You wanna trust me/But you don't know how/I'm never gonna mess around/Set you down, can't you see/That was her (that was her)/And baby this is me (this is me)/(This is me")
He's pulling a guilt trip on her for telling the truth. She tells him to give it up and that he's lucky she's still around. She cares and puts up with his possessiveness, which not a lot of girls would do. "Stop making me feel bad/I'm the best thing you ever had/The only thing I'm guilty of/
Is giving you too much love."
In the bridge, she tells him to stop the third degree and twisting her words around. She adds for him not to exact his revenge on her. He's making up dramas in his mind, which she doesn't appreciate. "Don't suffocate me, don't misunderstand me/Don't make me pay, for all her mistakes/Believe or not, it's in my kiss/(Don't see things that don't exist.")
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
While a majority of bubblegum pop is submissive and overtly sexual, Dream takes another route in the modern "This Is Me." They refuse to put up with any nasty behavior and have high self-esteem. It's implied that Blake isn't going to hang around much longer. She deserves better. Strong female teenagers are needed in pop music and Blake provides at least an idea of what one should be.
