Music Review: Mario "C'Mon"

Mario

C'Mon
Album: Mario
Year: 2003

Mario wishes the girl he has a crush on would come over and talk to him in the arid "C'Mon."

After opening with a barbershop harmony of "oohs," the obnoxious bass begins the melody immediately. Mario has never seen her before and wonders if she moved to where he lives. He's bewildered at the fact that he found his perfect girl. He praises her mother's good genes and her upbringing. He notices the girl giving him a dirty look from staring and he gives her an apologetic smile. He would like her to approach him for a conversation. "Where did you come from, I wanna thank your moms/For bringin' you into this life, and makin' you my type/Don't (don't) hold (hold) this (this) against me/But I can't help but stare, why you over there/Want you right here, c'mon yeah."

In the chorus, he's anxious as he stands around, watching her. He hopes she'll give him the time of day. But if she doesn't, he'll watch her walk away in her tight jeans. "C'mon baby baby c'mon/C'mon baby baby c'mon (oh baby baby baby baby)/Can't you look at me and tell that you've got something that I want/So c'mon baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby baby c'mon/You got the best lookin' jeans, I ever seen/So baby won't you shake it for me."

She's avoiding him, which he takes as a signal. He saw her glance at him once or twice. He's not worrying if she could barely carry a conversation. He just wants an opportunity to cop a feel. "Oo, don't play hard to get, you ain't got a thing to lose/I know you feel me too, staring from across the room/I (I) just (just) wanna get closer (closer) to ya (to ya)/We can talk later, right now I wanna see you move c'mon (whoa, oo yeah yeah.")

The chorus is repeated twice.

In the third verse, he likes that she's pretending he's not even there. It motivates him even more to get a dance with her. "I love the way you're (yeah)/Keepin' your distance, keepin' it persistant/I gotta get next to you/Feel (feel) you (you) shake shake it shake it shake it
on me/Can't wait no longer, c'mon its over/I'm feelin' you girl (c'mon girl.")

In the fourth verse, he repeats again that he would like to date her. The girl is still ignoring him which he again thinks is positive. Finally, he asks her to dance. "Girl you got me feelin' like I wanna get wit you girl/Don't try to front and act like/You don't feel it to(to) to(to) to(to) to(to)to girl/Now let's make moves girl (right now I wanna see you move c'mon.")

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

The repetition is headache-inducing in "C'Mon." The word "baby" is said eight times within a span of ten seconds. It seems like it would be a technical glitch. But it's actually the song. CD/MP3 skipping is not an enjoyable melody. There is a reason why "A Skipping Christmas" featuring Irving Berlin saying the same word over and over is not sold every season.

For dance music, the repetition is necessary. It builds momentum during the nine minutes until the crescendo is reached. However, for a three minute song, the formula does not work.
