Heart

I Didn't Want To Need You
Album: Brigade
Year: 1990

Ann Wilson is reluctant to admit her feelings about a one-night stand in the vulnerable "I
Didn't Want To Need You."

She used to believe in sleeping around. Love was something to do, not to have. After having sex with him, she shrugged it off like normal. But a couple days, she found herself missing his hand upon hers. "Baby, I never gave my heart to anyone, oh no/Used to think that love was a game/I used to make it just for fun/When we spent the night together/Didn't mean it meant that much/Now I just can't live without your touch."

In the chorus, she says she didn't intend on loving him. However, it happened unexpectedly. "I didn't wanna to need you, no/I didn't wanna want you like I do/I didn't mean to fall/Didn't wanna care at all/I didn't wanna need you/Like I need you now."

She's awake at night, wondering if she will run into him at the bar. She dreams of him embracing her in a cozy hug. She remembers his chest moving up and down as he slept next to her. She's not the type of woman to fall in love, which is why she's surprised at how she feels. "I can't get no sleep/'Coz I keep thinking of you all through the night, oh yeah/My eyes can't wait to see you again/My arms can't wait to hold you tight oh yeah/And when you're laying here beside me/There is nothing else I need/Never thought that this could ever be."

In the bridge, Wilson's voice under an 80s vocoder. She says she's been independant all her life. She's usually the one who loves 'em and leaves 'em. However, her feelings have taken control. She simply cannot go back to her old lifestyle. "I've always been free/To leave when I wanna leave/But it's not up to me anymore."

The chorus ends the single.

The strong "I Didn't Want To Need You" approaches promiscuousity from a different persceptive. Wilson relishes her sexuality. She didn't want cherish the idea of monogamy. It's an internal conflict she faces. For her, relationships meant giving up her freedom. But she realizes it doesn't have to be that way.
