I Wonder If I Take You Home
Album: Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam with Full Force
Year: 1985
Lisa Lisa appeases her impatient boyfriend pleas for sex in the refined "I Wonder If I Take You Home."
Nimble synthesizers and tireless drums open the single as Full Force sings "take me home, take me home." It creates a tense tone which matches well with Lisa Lisa's hesitant vocals.
In the first verse, Lisa Lisa confesses to her boyfriend that she's not ready for a sexual relationship yet. She's worried that as she's falling in love with him, he would be using and toying with her emotions. Then, she would be ashamed of herself for sleeping with him. "Baby, I know you're wondering/Why I won't go over to your place/'Cause I'm not to sure about how you feel/So I'd rather go at my own pace/And I know and you know that if we get together/
Emotions will grow to work/And I may do something I might regret the next day/And end up hurt/Oh I don't know."
In the chorus, she tells him she can't disregard her uneasiness. If it turns out to be a one-night stand, she would be going against what she believes a relationship could be. She's uncertain if he would still date her if they returned to her place. She likes him but doesn't really know his intentions. "That's the way that I feel/I'm so afraid of a one night stand/I wonder if I take you home would you still be in love, baby/Because I need you tonight/I wonder if I take you home, baby/'Cause I need you tonight."
In the bridge, Lisa Lisa sings "your love is" and the lithe synthesizers return.
Lisa Lisa defends her sexuality and assures him she's interested in having sex with him. She doesn't trust him fully, though. She believes he will stop calling her. Her boyfriend accuses her of stringing him along. However, she pleads with him to be considerate of her feelings. She tells him she will cave to the pressure eventually but not tonight. "Lately you've been expressing to me/Just how much you want to make love/I want it just as much as you do/But will you still keep in touch/You say I'm teasing but I do have a reason/Don't let your feelings fade/'Cause you will have me and sooner than you know it/If you could only wait."
After the chorus, Lisa Lisa realizes he's a jerk and that he only wants sex from her. "But on the real side/if you loved me, you would wait."
The forceful drums return for a 60-second solo, which Lisa Lisa "oohs" over towards the end. The chorus is sung but with extra "home's" added to it. The "your love is" section is repeated again. The chorus is sung again.
Then, Lisa Lisa and her boyfriend have a conversation. He tells her she's not "giving the relationship the credit it deserves." Lisa Lisa responds with a defiant "It's not that. I just feel you're rushing me." He takes her response as a jab and twists her words around. He says "since you don't love me, you don't wanna be with me." Lisa Lisa once again says "it's not that." She reitertes to him that she's "afraid of getting hurt" and doesn't know what to do. She says she's been going over it in her mind and can't reach a decision < "I just keep asking myself. Should I really take you home. What do you think?"
Full Force responds with three enthusiastic tap of the drums, implying yes. Then, Ful Force sing "take me home/take me home.."
Lisa Lisa says that he's begging her to sleep with him "You're down on your knees/begging me, please...take you home/will you still love me if I take you home."
Lisa Lisa ends the single with a hearty "will you still love me if I take you home." The lone synthesizer plays the melody of the chorus to close the single.
The mature "I Wonder If I Take You Home" finds Lisa Lisa weighing the consequences of having sex with a man she's only known for a short time. When it seems like she may give in to him, she comes to her senses and realizes she's betraying what she feels. In the 80s, female singers were contemplating sex with their boyfriends (Kylie "Got To Be Certain," Taylor Dayne "Don't Rush Me", Janet Jackson "Let's Wait Awhile.") However, "I Wonder If I Take You Home" tackles the pressure women feel head-on. The faulty argument of "if you loved me, you really would do it" is dismissed by Lisa Lisa's strong but undecisive reply. She considers that he could be using her and questions her own feelings for him. Smart and honest, the single is worth rediscovering.
