Music Review: Jesse McCartney "She's No You"

Jesse McCartney

She's No You
Album: Beautiful Soul
Year: 2005

Jesse McCartney respects his girlfriend in the frumpy "She's No You."

A bland acoustic guitars strums in the opening of the single. In the first verse, he tells her that no one can match up to her. She's the one for him. She treats him well, which is enough for him. He doesn't even look at other girls. Celebrities and supermodels don't even attract him. He loves her for who she is. ("I know a lotta girls who have it going on/But nothing's ever a comparison to you/Now can't you see that your the only one I really want/And everything I need/Is everything you do/Any girl walk by, don't matter/'Cause your looking so much better/Don't ever need to get/Caught up in jealousy/She could be a super-model/Every magazine... the cover/She'll never, ever mean a thing to me.")

In the chorus, he says that the other girls do not have her qualities. They cannot make him smile when he's upset. They cannot talk about everything and nothing with him. The supermodels, to him, are fake and not his definition of a normal girl. ("She's no you... oh, no
You give me more than I could ever want/She's no you/I'm satisfied with the one I've got
'cause your all the girl/That I've ever dreamed/She's only a picture on a magazine/
She's no you, she's no you.")

In the second verse, he's noticed how other girls can shake their bodies. However, he likes how his girlfriend is comfortable with herself. She doesn't have to be the best dancer. To him, she's perfect looking. He likes her flaws. It what makes her his. ("They got a lot of girls/Who dance in all the videos/But I prefer the way you do/The way you move/You're more than beautiful/And I just wanna let you know/That all I ever need/Is what I've got with you.")

In the pre-chorus, he tells her she grows beautiful more and more each day. He would keep her freckles and even the couple pimples on her face. ("Any girl walk by, don't matter/Every time you're looking better/I think you're perfect/There ain't nothing I would change/She could be a super-model/Every magazine... the cover/She'll never, ever take my heart away.")

After the chorus is sung, McCartney rushes into the third verse which thankfully plugs the contrived strings for about 20 seconds. She's the first girl he's ever loved. He will never meet anyone like her again. ("No one's ever gonna get to me/Oh, the way you do/Now baby can't you see/That you're the one, the only one/Who's ever made me feel this way/Nothing's ever coming even close/No one's ever been comparable to you.") Then, the strings purge their pent-up cheese.

In the bridge, he says he doesn't wish for better. She's the only girl who understands him. He tells her to stay the same and never change, as though he were writing in a yearbook. She's meant to be with him. ("I don't want nothing I don't got/I don't need nothing but you/I can't get more than you're given me/Don't stop anything you do/Your all that, all that and then some/
You know what just what I need/And no girl, no place and nowhere/Could mean a thing to me.")

The chorus with certain lyrics from the first verse is sung. Then, the ill-conceived strings end the single.

While the sweet "She's No You" has a positive message, McCartney is simply too young sounding to pull it off. He may be 18, but he sounds like he's 12. His vocals lack depth, as though they were pre-recorded. His programmed boyband voice hinders him.

The music arrangement has a mid-90s post-grunge touch to it. It proves one thing: the style was best left to nostalgia. With a fresher sound and an accomplished singer, "She's No You" could've been a heartfelt song.
