Object Desktop Trashes System

Hey guys,

I've just read the forum and noticed people have been having their systems trashed after installing Object Desktop -- apps not starting, printers quitting working, system instability, etc.

Personally, I've been running WindowBlinds 4.51 for a while and all was fine. Then I decided to upgrade to the full Object Desktop suite. After I installed Stardock Central my problems started.

First, Logical Disk Manager would not load and time out with a "Server Execution Failed" error. Then random apps that depended on OLE/COM/DCOM would refuse to start, quoting "OLE initialization failed. Make sure the libraries are the correct version."

I reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 three times and each time these exact symptoms started happening immediately after installing Stardock Central and also teh new Windowblinds (4.51.047) and IconPackager (3.00a).

I just built this computer so I thought it was bad RAM, but the RAM checked out fine and these exact symptoms occured three times on three clean Windows installations.

So, what I'm asking you guys for is to post all your similar problems which you noticed started happening directly after installing Object Desktop. Let's make sure Stardock hears about this and fixes it, I want my Object Desktop!

Iconpackager may be the problem. Check this article:

Even after the update, some people are still experiencing problems as you describe. If possible, you might try an earler version of IP.

HOW? SDCentral only shows the most recent non-beta release and the most recent beta. HOW do you get to earlier stable versions? Is there an FTP server with prior stable releases available to Object Desktop Network subscribers? Is there a trick to get SD Central to display prior releases?

Please, if you know how to get to those previous versions, tell me. I'm currently running the default Windows XP GUI [shudder] because the only accessible versions of SD software are unusable.

After foolishly updating to the lastest non-beta releases of WindowBlinds, ObjectDock+, and ObjectBar last night I spent 6 hours troubleshooting last night. Despite several attempts at uninstall/reinstall of the apps, rolling back to archived versions, and three separate Windows System Restore points across two prior days, I had to completely remove all SD applications. Even after doing so several of my third-party applications are still not functional.

The SD applications apparently change a core system DLL--or something else of a low-level OS nature--and they've rendered half a dozen of my mission-critical applications unusable.

As usual, Stardock support is no help. Like many other companies, their support department seems to be learning that finding support boundaries to cite is more cost effective than actually trying to resolve customers' technical issues.

I do it through SDC - restore archive - only works if you archive upon update

oops. nevermind. just dawned on me you already mentioned rolling back.

What did work for my issues of programs not running and losing systray icons was unregistering iprepair.dll following the info in Link

Hey all, thanks for your replies! I read the linked article and it seems that's the problem I'm having. Fortunately I have an older version of Icon Packager (2.50) that I will be able to use in the meantime. Gonna work on this problem tonight and report back when I'm done.
