Music Review: INXS "New Sensation"

INXS

New Sensation
Album: Kick
Year: 1988

Rock Star: INXS, in its attempt to remain credible involve the band deciding who will the next lead singer. But to appeal to reality television fans, people are filmed inside the house. While the producers will try to cultivate a personality out editing room, viewers will lose the mystery. The mystery is what keeps people interested.

INXS, unfortunately, is using the current marketing strategy of celebrity by paparazzi. In other words, people learn everything know about them which they would've been better off knowing. The missed opportunity is allowing younger fans who didn't know of the band before the show, a chance to get to know the band. INXS has brand recongnition and a following. The focus should be on the band, not the show contestants. The contestants will be forgotten after the summer is over. INXS has a rich back catalogue going back to the 80s.

I said it in a previous article about the band and I'll say it again: Michael Hutchence embodies the band. Someone who just came off the plane whose seeking their 15 minutes of fame isn't going to cut it. Hopefully, the show will fuel interest in their older albums.

In the spry "New Sensation," Hutchence tries to spark his girlfriend's bottled up emotions.

He urges his girlfriend to discover different things in life. He relishes every stare or soft smile she gives him. He wakes her up to watch the sun creep in from the window. For him, it's the start of a day which gives hope to achieving his goals. ("Live baby live/Now that the day is over/I got a new sensation/In perfect moments/Impossible to refuse/Sleep baby sleep/
Now that the night is over/And the sun comes like a god/Into our room/All perfect light and promises.")

In the chorus, he says they have a strong bond. It's something which he's never had with someone before. ("Gotta hold on you/A new sensation/A new sensation/Right now/Gonna take you over/A new sensation/A new sensation.")

In the second verse, he encourages her to reach higher. He mentions some of them may have dissipated due to someone else in her life deterring her or some may be fleeting. Not all dreams have to be in stone. He tells her that dreams and goals are both the same thing. He tells her to drown herself in tears, if she feels she needs to. He'll be there, listening and comforting her. ("Dream baby dream/Of all that's come and going/And you will find out/In the end/There really is/There really is no difference/Cry baby cry/When you've got to get it out/I'll be. your shoulder/You can tell me all/Don't keep it in ya/Well that's the reason why I'm here.")

In the chorus, Hutchence lets out some hearty "yeah's" and asks her if willing to allow herself to feel. ("Are you ready for a new sensation/A new sensation/Right now/Gonna take you on a new sensation/A new sensation.")

He tells her it's ok for her to abhor certain things. She's a person and feelings are a part of her. He says her anger will disappear and not to let it fester. He notices her glancing at him tenderly. He says they have the rest of their lives. They can do anything. ("Hate baby hate/When there's nothing left for you/You're only human/What can you do/It'll soon be over/Don't let your pain take over you/Love baby love/It's written all over your face/There's nothing better we could do/Than live forever/Well that's all we've got to do.")

The chorus ends the single.

The deft "New Sensation" teems with passion and cheer. Hutchence's enthralling vocals push the lyrics further. Each statement is pulsing with fervor (i. e."live, baby, live"). By the end, it has become a battlecry.
