Girlfriend
Album: Pandemonium!
Year: 2003
Omarion, lead singer of B2K, is surrounded by luxury and fame but lacks a close romantic relationship in his life in the droning "Girlfriend."
Omarion intros the song with that he doesn't have a girlfriend to share his life. ("I've got everything I want in my life except a girlfriend.")
The monotonous bass pounds away as Omarion describes the typical day as a member of a popular R&B boyband. He has a new Bentley in his garage, which he just bought the other day. He's readying himself for an afternoon with his masseuse. On his way there, he will see people who will recongnize him and say they are awesome. He's wearing the latest shoes and changes cars. In his Jeep, he rides around with young girls who like pop stars themselves. ("Just copped a Bentley and it's parked in my garage/A two o'clock appointment for my massage/
And everywhere we go they know just who we are/There they go it's them ghetto superstars/
The lastest throw backs and the ones on my feet/Get off the Benz and them I'm off up in the Jeep/Take ya fix with chicks that look like Alicia Keys/All of that I'm still missin' one thing.")
In the chorus, he says he would like a girlfriend. ("A girlfriend, girlfriend/I need a girlfriend, girlfriend/A girlfriend, girlfriend/Would you be my girlfriend, girlfriend.")
In the second verse, he goes on to shopping sprees. However, he buys mostly one thing: Nike track suits. While he sits poolside, people wait on him hand and foot. He has yes-people following him around telling him how great he is. He has a lot of clothes, jewelry, and money. He mentions he also has a handsome body and is well-equipped in the crotch department. ("We hit the mall buyin' up all the Nike suits/I'm being pampered while I'm chillin' by the pool/From the show to the limo to the club/Hands in the air showin' nothin' but some love/Got plenty clothes, plenty ice plenty cash/A pretty swope plenty abs plenty shhh/I got every single thing that I need/Except for a main squeeze.")
In the bridge, a guy acting like a DJ at the club tells everyone it's a B2K song. Meanwhile, Omarion wonders what girl will be his girlfriend. The fake DJ tells the single women to get out their chairs and flirt with Omarion. Omarion says it's likely to be a girl who wants a man who is genuine, loyal, and give the group what it needs. In other words, he wants a groupie. The DJ (whose lyrics are alternated) tells people to put their hands in their air and repeats if it's going to be a loyal girl. ("Alright Alright/We got B2K up in this piece/(Tell me who's gonna be my girlfriend)/And we need all the ladies out there lookin' for a nice fella to get up out yo seat c'mon!/(And who I bet needs a real man)/Put y'all hand up Put y'all hands up(And who's gonna ride or die with me)/Yeah who's gonna be that ride or die chick for me tonight/(Who's gonna give B2K what they need)
Fizz raps that he wants a curvy girl. He'll let the band's manager pick out the hot girls for him and bring them backstage. The girl has to want to make out with him for a long time. He does find one, but she gets jealous and fights with him. He dumps her and moves on to the next girl. ("I need a thick with big hips that's just my motivation/No more game preperation, This is pimperation/She must be ready and steady for a romance session/I'm talkin' willin' to learn, A Lil Fizz lesson/Now she playin' at it again and now we arguin'/Talkin' girls talk mess and tellin' all her friends/When I seen this new chick tonight/and I'ma make her my girlfriend, my girlfriend.") Fizz's amateurish raps are without any vocal inflections or feeling. Not to mention, he sees girls as disposable. If they disagree with him, they're gone. And that kind of attitude? It's rather scary.
The chorus is repeated twice to end the single.
The spoiled "Girlfriend" starts out with Omarion's bragging about his lifestyle. However, he sees girls as props. It's another form of status. For Fizz, he feels entitled to a girl who blindly follows him and won't talk back. He wants the Stepford girlfriend. Neither of them are worth pining over. They are both consumed by fame and have let it go to their heads.
