Get It Off
Album: After the Storm
Year: 2003
Monica hooks up with a thug in the club in the wayward "Get It Off."
In the intro, Monica "yeah-ay-ay's" and then says she's going start the party. ("Yeah, I'ma set it off/C’mon now.") Tires screech and then crowd noises can be heard. Elliott announces that it's a new Monica single. ("Yeah/Ohh/This that hot shit ya’ll set it off/New Monica shit/C’mon.")
The crowd quiets down and finally the subtle groove of the beat can be heard. Monica starts the first verse. When she was a teenager, she was scared of her sex. ("You remember when I was just a young one/And I was too afraid to quickly let you show me thangs.") However, as people get interested in the verse, Elliott interrupts. She tells the DJ's to stop and says for them to start it again. ("Hol up, Hol Up/Big show DJ’s/This joint so crazy put the needle back on the record let’s do a double take.")
Then the single goes downhill. Dirtbag's pedestrian rap is next, stalling the momentum the song had built so far. Dirt Bag says he's not a nice guy. He can't remember all the girls he's been with. However, he has a brand new Jeep and tells Monica she can follow him to the diner. They'll have lunch and he tells her if everything goes well, they may be having lunch in the Bahamas. He adds that he's a street thug and that he will take her wherever she wants to go, providing it's not on the rival turf. He thinks she's beautiful. He says he's not into oral sex but he's willing to for her. He mentions they can have sex in a hotel room. Then, she will have her choice of either red or white afterwards. ("Now listen baby I'm a dirt bag/I don’t know the different faces, I can't take it/But I got a jeep, so you lead and I’ll follow/Lunch up in a diner, if ya act right we dine in the Bahamas/Now wow lil' momma, I'm a gangsta/Anywhere ya wanna go I'ma take ya/Oh my god you caught my eyes like from 20 yards/You so damn fine/Listen I don’t eat peaches but the way you look tonight/I just might take a bite/Come closer, feel that/
It’s a woman and a man and a latex/Out the shower, hotel flowers on the bed/Choice of wine white or red/What more can I say/Monica, DirtBag, ATL MIA.") Awwww. He's the gangsta with a heart of gold. Except he's insincere, crass, and unbelieveable. With a name like Dirtbag, selling a romantic image is downright laughable. Who hired this guy?
After the unnecessary rap, Monica gets a chance to sing on her own song. She repeats that she was scared of sex when she was a teenager. She wasn't open to having a sexual relationship relationship due to not being mature enough. But now that she's older, she wants to freak up and down the street. She asks Dirtbag to not to be rough. She's still rather inexperienced. Missy Elliott shouts "set it off!," stealing spotlight yet again. ("You remember when I was just a young one/And I was to afraid to quickly let you show me thangs/Not sure if I was ready for some good love, and I'm bout to set it off/Can you please be gentle cuz I am the fragile kind/
And even though I'm ready for the move of my time/Now buckle up yo seat while I set it off.")
Elliott continues to say set it off several times ("set it off, set it off, set-set-set it off"), reminding listeners who the real star is.
The background singers sing the chorus as Monica adlibs "yeah, yeah" over it. All Dirtbag has to do is give Monica a call and they'll sleep together. ("Baby let me set it off, do you mind it I get it off/Set it off, set it off/All it takes is one phone call, if you wanna get it on/Set it off, set it off.")
She tells Dirtbag to hold off for awhile until they figure out what's apropos. She wants to be sure he's not diseased or anything. However, she should've thought before agreeing to sleep with a guy named Dirtbag. Elliott references one-hit wonder Khia "My Neck" by singing a part of the chorus. ("I know your anxious but please let's make a compromise/I'm so energized all in my neck my back my thighs/Make sure the lock is safe before I set it off.")
After the chorus is Monica's stodgy rap is next. She tells Dirtbag they can have sex but they should not inform anyone else. She says she has a different style each album (which is bull, by the way) and that her songs close the club. ("Now I'ma get it , you can tell them Mo said it/
And you betta not forget it, now don’t sweat it/And we can really go at it, if you let it let’s protect it/Now I bet it be good is you ready/But the jump of heavy, my style varies/
The club down I shut it, how I do it/I set it in me.")
Missy says they are adlibbing now ("breakdown") As siren goes off, Monica sings "I will set it off/I will set it off/I’ll set it off/I will set it off/I’ll set it/I’ll set it.") However, Monica sings it in such a listless manner the siren may as well be out of batteries.
The problematic "Get It Off" has Monica losing control of her song. Elliott constantly barges in and then proceeds to take over. Elliott adds crowd noises, Dirtbag, and a cold chorus -- none of which Monica participates in. If the beat remained bare (like it was for five seconds), the single may have a had a chance. But its suffocated under Elliott's overproduction and Monica's phoned-in singing.
