Music Review: Amerie "1 Thing"

Amerie

1 Thing
Album: Touch
Year: 2005

Amerie's remembers a moment with her guy friend which led her to have romantic feelings for him in the jumpy, go-go style influenced "1 Thing."

Amerie "na, na, na, na, na, oh/Na, na, na, na, na, oh/Na, na, na, na, na, oh/Na, na, na, na, na.") to start the single. However, her vocals are distorted by the overproduction. It sounds as though she is singing "gobble, gobble."

In the first verse, she's been pretending the moment between them hadn't happened. She's careful not to stare at him for too long and stops herself from flirting with him. The moment was quick but she found herself looking at him differently. For her, something to seems to be there between them. But she's been wondering about it ever since then. She wants to tell him how she feels but she's afraid. ("Oh, been trying to let it go/Trying to keep my eyes closed/Trying to keep it just like before/The times we never even thought to speak/Don’t wanna tell you what it is/Oh wee it felt so serious/Got me thinking just too much/I wanna set it off, but.")

It's the moment which she's agonizing over. ("It’s this 1 thing that’s got me trippin/It’s this 1 thing that’s got me trippin (you did)/This 1 thing my soul may be feeling/It’s this 1 thing you did oh oh/It’s this 1 thing that caught me slippin/It’s this 1 thing I want to admit it (you did)/This 1 thing and I was so with it/It’s this 1 thing you did oh oh.")

In the second verse, she says they haven't been friends for very long. However, she looks forward to his phone calls. Her intuition is telling her she's in love with him. But she prefers to ignore it as she readies herself to go over to his house. ("Hey, we don’t know each other well/
so why I keep pickin' up my cell?/Memories just keep ringing bells/Oh oh, Oh oh, Oh/Hear voices I don’t want to understand/My car keys are jingling in my hand/My high heels are clicking towards your door/Oh oh, Oh oh, Oh.")

After the chorus is the bridge. She is in shock that the moment happened. She expected the guy to treat her like one of his beer buddies. But her feelings are becoming overwhelming and she cannot keep them to herself anymore. ("Maybe I just can’t believe it/It’s this one thing you did oh oh/I can’t deny, tired of trying/Open up the door, but just keep on seeing you/I’m hoping you can keep a secret/For me, for me, for me/But what you did, yeah.")

The chorus is sung three times to end the single. The jittery "1 Thing" has been proclaimed the summer jam of 2005. But like most summer jams, they are unmemorable and dull. The music has either been sampled many times already (Lumidee's "Never Leave," Ashanti "Foolish") or the singer lacks charisma. For Amerie, the "1 Thing" shows promise. Amerie's light vocals are authoriative and energetic. The music itself is modernized 80s. It's most effective in the bridge where a jazzy flair emerges. However, it's mostly too familiar sounding with other past summer jams.
