Naughty Girls Need Love Too
Album: Samantha Fox
Year: 1987

Samantha Fox gives up casual sex after falling in love with one of her conquests in the bawdy "Naughty Girls (Need Love Too.)"

Fox comments at the beginning of the song that perhaps self-proclaimed bad girls like her have to be held and cuddled. ("Maybe, just maybe/Naughty girls need love too.") After each "maybe" the drum machines convey a tone of mock surprise.

After the spoken intro, low-grade synthesizers start, creating a crass, classless tone. In the first verse, she says she has never followed other people's advice about relationships. However, she's never been interested in romantic relationships and prefers to have sex instead. She thinks 'other guys treat girls like objects. I can do the same to them.' For her, love was nonexistent. An idea she thought which was presposterous. However, she's in love and shocked she's feel that way. ("I've been told time and time again/That you can't treat love like a game/But I play rough with hearts that never mend/'cause some guys like you do the same/Love was just a four-letter word/Never heard, how absurd, how could it be/But now I can't believe this is real/How I feel, now you steal my heart away from me.")

Next, she raps. Or at least attempts to rap but ends up not being able to pull it off. She used to enjoy her sexual encounters. She thought she was rebelling against conservative values she had known. For her, having sex was easy and simple. She loved the thrill of it. However, she's uncertain as she learns her previous ideas about love and sex were flawed. ("Used to be so good and so bad/Sex was something I just had/Used to always know what to do/Now you've got me confused.")

In the chorus, she sings again. tells her new guy not to judge her by her countless partners. She was just having fun but it's different with him. Baby don't let me be misunderstood/Temporary love's so bad, but it feels so good/Then along came you, now I know it's true/Naughty girls need love...too.") The word "too" is punctated by two thrashing beats from the drum machine.

Producers of the single, Full Force, provide background vocals next. Accompanied by record scratching and a subdued drum machine, they sing "then came you/then came you.")

Fox admits she's in love and says it. She vows not to let him go and assures she will give him physical satsification forever. She only has eyes for him. It was unexpected for her to to feel more with him than with the other guys. His feelings for her are softening and exciting her. ("Yes it's true, I'm in love with you/And believe it baby, this time your love won't get away/Stay here, in the place to be - we can get busy my way/For six forevers and a day/Ooh, it's only you I adore/So much more then my body was asking for/Yes, your love is breaking my chill/
Even still, there's a thrill in my heart.")

A member of Full Force says Fox was once unrestrained but has changed her ways. She defends herself, saying she's more than just her easy reputation. A member of Full Force stutters her name. Fox says for them to stop tiptoeing around the fact they want a relationship. Her boyfriend (the member of Full Force) says they should celebrate by having sex. ("Samantha fox was such a wild dame, huh, but what's in a name/(s-s-samantha s-s-s-s-samantha fox!)/No more fun and games of the mind - let's get busy one time.")

After a "whoa!," the chorus is sung. Then, the drum machines and synthesizers have a solo.

Fox has another rap. She ridicules a person for dancing awkwardly and badly to the music. She says the beat is oh so erotic. She asserts again she only wants her new guy. She tells the men on the dance floor to holler and yell. The member of Full Force promises her jewelry. However, Fox isn't having it. If he's just saying that, she will become bitter. ("So moving like you're forty/This groove is much too naughty/Can't you see, I want you just for me/
Boys, make some noise/Girl, I want to shower you with diamonds and/Please don't tease, if you lie my heart will freeze/Freeze, freeze, freeze, freeze, freeze, freeze, freeze.") The word "freeze" becomes hidden underneath the drum machine.

The chorus ends the single.

The wanton "Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)" has Samantha Fox not really learning much of anything. She makes it clear that she likes sex but she pretends she isn't ashamed. It's her shame (which is implied somewhat) that cuts her bad girl credibility into shambles. She should have been saying "this is how was I before, live with it" instead of hiding it. The contemptible attitude towards her past is sudden and doesn't go with the song's message at all. If Samantha Fox is going to sell sex, she should understand the subtleties of the message and not base it on a single 'shocking' catchphrase.
