Music Review: Weezer "Beverly Hills"

Weezer

Beverly Hills
Album: Make Believe
Year: 2005

Rivers Cuomo has a fantasy of being rich and living lavishly in 90210 in the charming and relatable "Beverly Hills."

A drumroll starts the song, building anticipation. Brawny guitars and handclaps follow. Cuomo talks about his regular Joe lifestyle. He has a car which is ready to fall apart any minute. He doesn't have any style and his friends are just as quirky as he is. He went to the neighborhood public schools. Even at his high school, the popular girls didn't even know he existed. He agrees with the popular girls who ignored him: he sees himself as nothing special. He mentions he doesn't have any money. He's always broke. ("Where I come from isn't all that great/My automobile is a piece of crap/My fashion sense is a little whack/And my friends are just as screwy as me/I didn't go to boarding schools/Preppy girls never looked at me/
Why should they I ain't nobody/Got nothing in my pocket.")

In the chorus, Cuomo explains he would rather live in Beverly Hills and forget his ordinary life for a while. He would have everything imaginable and people would love him. ("Beverly Hills - That's where I want to be! (Gimme Gimme)/Living in Beverly Hills/Beverly Hills - Rolling like a celebrity! (Gimme Gimme)/Living in Beverly Hills.") A breathy woman background singer adds "Gimme Gimme" at the first and last lyric of the chorus.

He sees celebrities on television, dressed to the nines in the new "It" designer's clothing. They have maids and butlers who do their housework for them and never miss a spot. He would have a photo shoot at his Olympic-sized pool while being interviewed by a reporter, asking what projects he's working on now that he's famous and on the A-List. ("Look at all those movie stars/They're all so beautiful and clean/When the housemaids scrub the floors/
They get the spaces in between/I wanna live a life like that/I wanna be just like a king/
Take my picture by the pool/Cause I'm the next big thing!")

After the chorus, is some fantastic instrumentation. The "wah-wah" guitar adds a funky, punchy touch to it. (perhaps? I'm guessing. Feel free to post and correct me.) He knows it's just a fantasy and has to do more with the class system. Beverly Hills is not his world and he would stick out like a sore thumb.

He adds he's always going to be a regular Joe. He decides to let go of the dream of living in Beverly Hills and have fun hanging out with his friends. ("The truth is...I don't stand a chance/
It's something that you're born into/And I just don't belong/No I don't - I'm just a no class, beat down fool/And I will always be that way/I might as well enjoy my life/And watch the stars play.")

The chorus is sung once. The nifty wah-wah guitar returns as Cuomo says "Beverly Hills."

The smart "Beverly Hills" is Cuomo thinking, "wouldn't it be cool just to be rich for a day?" However, he comes to his senses and realizes that the Beverly Hills life is not realistic. It may seem like an awesome lifestyle but he's not going to trade his current life for it. Let's face it: Weezer is never going to top the Blue album. It's an essential album for fans of rock, period. of "Beverly Hills" is mighty close to reaching the quality of the Blue album.
