Music Review: Da Brat "In Luv Wit Chu"

Da Brat

In Luv Wit Chu
Album: Limelite Luv & Niteclubz
Year: 2003

Da Brat has found the guy of her dreams in the deficient "In Luv Wit Chu."

Opening with the standard record company introduction and Da Brat's trademark (but now dated) "rat-tat-tat y'all" phrase. She says she's about to a rap a new song from her album. She adds that's it a hot CD. Yeah, she said the same thing about the Mariah Carey movie, "Glitter." ("Yo, So So (wassup) So Def/Yeah, LT Hutton, uh/And it's the rat-tat-tat y'all, huh/And it's another album, huh/And it's so phat phat phat y'all.")

The "I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love" of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is sampled for the chorus. A background singer sings for Da Brat by saying she's so in love. Da Brat comments that she's willing to do anything for her boyfriend. He's the guy she's been looking for. She thinks of him morning and night. When she needs affection, it's him she wants. ("Ohhh, I'm in luv, I'm in luv/I'm in luv, I'm in luv wit chu/And there ain't nothin I won't do for my baby/
You drives me crazy/And you make me say/Ohhh, I'm in luv, I'm in luv/I'm in luv, I'm in luv wit chu/And there ain't nothin nobody can say cuz/You're the one for me baby/When I wake up in the morning (it's you)/When I can't sleep at night (it's you)/When I'm tossin 'n turnin (it's you)/
When my body yearnin (it's you).")

She begins the first verse with a generic simile. She says she's "in love like Maxwell." Except Maxwell is now irrelevant and hasn't been popular since 1997. Every singer from then on has written a love song. Couldn't she find a much more current singer to compare it to? She says that she's cries for no reason other than her emotions. He's a self-esteem booster, providing her with confidence by simply walking with him. She then references the Teena Marie and Rick James hit "Fire and Desire." She also uses up all her minutes on her cell phone to call him. Then, she goes into a self-involved rant about how other guys want her and how cool she is. It's filler and really, who cares? The song isn't about how cool she is, it's about him.

("Yeah, I'm in love like Maxwell/You see me crying, but I just can't help it/My self esteem is even higher when I'm walking wit you/You give me fire and desire like Teena Marie and Rick James do/I don't care, burn up the minutes on the cell/Just turn up the music and feel that it's hard as hell/I get abusive with the flows on 'D?/When I seduce them, they just wanna hold me/
Cuz I'm so smooth, and it's real not phony...It's beneficial, I'm hot, and since you is, let's do this
It seems I've been shot by cupid/I'm not gonna stop, think not/That's stupid cuz.")

In the second verse, she says he's better than any expensive material possession she owns. She's always thinking about him. He sees her for who she is. He's handsome and when he's around, she only concentrates on him. She asks him to have sex with her while using a reference to Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's "Rhythm Gonna Get You." She then uses the outdated phrase "knockin' da boots" and references R. Kelly's "Feelin' On Ya Booty." The latter reveals that Da Brat is tone deaf.

("I'm in luv wit chu more than my car, more than my house/more than the night I keep your name comin out of my mouth/I can't get you off of my mind/Finally found somebody who see's me besides what's on the outside/Fine as Roy Jones, stick 'n movin my bones/Your presence make everything else irrelevant when we close/Turn off the two way, do lay your head on my pillow/And do me baby, the rhythm gonna getcha groovin baby/And we can rock it till the broad daylight/Bodies knockin da boots, destroying property, proping me up to get through/
It ain't right how you're feeling on my boo-hoo-hee-tee/It's just you and me, unexplanatory, the way that you adore me...")

The chorus is repeated four times. Da Brat's outro (which is the same as the intro) ends the single.

Da Brat has been riding the coattails of Jermaine Dupri, Mariah Carey, and Missy Elliott for years now. Without them featured in her single, there isn't an enjoyable moment. The foul "In Luv With Chu" proves she doesn't have any talent beyond networking at the So So Def record label.
