Music Review: Ginuwine "Same Ol' G"

Ginuwine

Same Ol' G
Album: Dr. Dolittle Soundtrack/100% Ginuwine
Year: 1998

Ginuwine says he hasn't changed since becoming a popular R & B singer in the put on Pollyanna act of "Same Ol' G."

Soft bass and handclaps begin the single. Ginuwine comments he's not an excessive drinker. In fact, he's a social drinker who only has one. He can buy expensive suits. However, he asks people not to be jealous of his newfound wealth. He's only being himself. ("the only time I drink a 40 is when I wanna drink a 40/and usually when I wear a suit/I leave with not one but two/
I'm not trying to hurt nobody/you only live once they told me/you can't be mad at me/I can just be "G.")

In the chorus, he says that although he has music videos showing on MTV and a hit record in stores, he's not a fame-hungry person consumed with celebrity. ("even though I got my own c.d./maybe even on t.v./there ain't no changing me/I can only be me me me/even though I might be on t.v./cause I got my own c.d./all you will ever see/same ol' "G.")

Before he hit it big, he was the life of the party. Now, he rather hang out with his friends at home. Friends from his old neighborhood are still stealing cars and selling drugs. However, he doesn't have an interest in getting into trouble. He's been wondering what direction his life will take him. The only constant is that he will be himself. ("I used to be the main one clubbin'/
but now I choose to stay at home/most of my friends still thuggin'/this time the "G"s full grown/
I'm thinking 'bout my future lately/whatever that may be/but now it's clear to me/I can just be "G.")

After the chorus, Timbaland speaks in the bridge. He says hello to all the listeners and then points the finger at the people who've claimed Ginuwine has changed. He says it's everyone else who isn't the same anymore. It's those people who aim to spread the tabloid rumors and such. They are the problem, not them. Timbaland, fed up with other people's cruel behavior, says he can only be true to himself. ("hello ya'll/yeah this that Timbaland coming to ya one mo 'gain/
you see, people say that we're changing/but really it's the people around us that are changing/
you see, we ain't tryna hurt nobody/people tryna hurt us/but you know what/I'ma keep being me/that's all I can do in this lifetime (check it.")

The bridge continues. Ginuwine sings a variation of the chorus. Timbaland interjects after each lyric, repeating what has been already said. He says he's himself everyday. ("day after day/I continue to be/me oh me/that's all I can be/oooh day after day/I continue to be me oh me/
(that)same ol' "G.")

The chorus is sung again but with Timbaland's comments added. The chorus instrumental ends the single with Ginuwine singing "same ol' G" when the section comes up.

Ginuwine's just a bit too perfect in the blustering "Same Ol' G." But after the raunchy "Pony," it's not an image that can be easily bought. First impressions stick. One single stating his clean-cut image is not persuasive.
