Governments

is there any tactical advantage to changing between governments during the game? i mean moving back to imperium, say, when you have star federation...

There is only one benefit that I know of and that is it makes the senate easier to control which helps to ensure you will keep your party's political abilities. However it means you recieve less income and you can't spend as much as well :(. Not really a good idea unless the senate is becoming a real problem.

thanx, i was just musing whether being in an imperium while at war, say, was more beneficial that being in a democracy. i was thinking i suppose about the democratic war penalty in civ 3 and was wondering whether this kinda thing was built into the game

If you're suffering major destabilization, it might be worth moving back to Imperium but this means you exchange the political party penalty for a -60% econ penalty. That doesn't seem worthwhile, particularly if you picked the +20%econ party.
