Luck

I read somewhere on the forum someone asking for "what to do with the luck factor". I tried a civ with a high luck ratio and... "found" a lot of rangers (every x turn) on my different planets. It realy help! I "found" the first one when nobody has the technology yet... you may imagine the result!

Worth a try

I haven't played with "luck" for a while but when I did, "finding" rangers was the obvious benefit. I read months ago that luck also helps your ship to shoot first during combat but I didn't pay enough attention to this during gameplay. Would someone care to comment on other benefits of luck?

I'm pretty sure attacker always shoots first.

I haven't used luck for a while, either.

I've played as Universalists and also taken the Luck boost, giving me two luck boosts. :) I won that game, too. Guess I got... lucky. LOL

Luck ability is still not fleshed out sufficiently, according to Brad.

Personally doesn't think it does much currently but we had players over the months claiming that this ability does wonderous things, including giving the player a better start with more yellows! LOL

I Ray

I did not think at this but in the play with my high luck, the second planet that I found was a 30... Lucky isn't it

30? You mean a 26 or 20 with colonization bonuses? The only natural occuring planets are from 1-20 and 26.

The luck stat is no fully fleshed out? It seems to get me some Lucky Rangers occassionally, but not much more...so I can see the lacking of...fleshed out-ness. I take it that the same goes for Creativity...not being fully fleshed out, I mean. It seems to do NOTHING whatsoever.

Rumor has it that it lowers the alignment requirement for researching an evil-only or good-only tech.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Creativity improves the chances of Unexplained anomalies giving you +25% research toward the current tech instead of nothing.

HI,

It is hard to remember all these thing (the planet may have been 26 but I know that at the end it was around 36: soil imp., habitat improv, terra., and the terraformer :HOT: ). I only know that this game was very easy and I can't say how much the luck factor was the cause.

I only say now:

MAY THE LUCK BE WITH YOU ;)

Yupp, luck is quite solid. I've been experimenting with Luck and Universalists for +50% luck. I generally by the time battleships roll around (on normal) have a full complement of Rangers for active defence and the starting position is generally above average often brilliant (20 planet withing two spaces and 26 planet as Sol V). Out of curiosity is there a luck & creativity synergy?

I think that the luck bonus really helps when you are playing some of the easier levels, but on Maso I have never seen an increase in anything due to luck. Although I have rarely played with no luck bonus (+25% luck for one point seems a good investment) So I don't really know what a Maso game would be like without +25% luck :notsure:

Something like masochistic I guess ;)

Just started a new game yesterday, only added the
25% luck pick...and already within the first 20
years of game have 4 Rangers...haven't had that since long ago luck picks...so would say luck pick
helped there for sure, and do remember one game with
Unie's picked and big luck pick i got Lot'o corvettes,
of course by then all aliens were far ahead of corvettes,so they were only good as tradebait,
but still only happened with a luck pick... ;)

I love luck, I once got a ranger in the early Battlecruiser era (corvettes still in wide use with battle cruisers while the Drengins have Frigates, scary.) needless to say, that ship got me 3 of their planets.

I dunno, just started and with the luck 1 option I still managed a win. But hey that's what you get for bein a n00b.

Does anyone out there play Maso level games with +25% or +50% luck bonus? Does it help on starting position or do you get better anomalies? I know I don't find Rangers or other super ships when I play Maso with +25% luck. It would be nice to know what random calculations the luck bonus is used with :d This would give me a better idea of which level of play the luck bonus is best utilised with ;)

Though I cannot respond specifically for maso, I would note that I've found that the +25 does not give me free rangers (maybe once) but using uni's and the other pick to crank it to +50% I get them quite often. Granted this is on normal, but I do notice the extra pick gives better results. And boy do those rangers come in handy, especially if you get them early. They trash corvettes quite well :)

When I take 25% luck on maso, I usually get rangers but never before anybody knows the ranger tech. As for the starting position, I wouldn't know since I almost always take the first start given to me.

I took 25% luck on my last game and got a ranger for three turns, although it was fairly late in the game. As far as starting position, I don't think it helped a bit.

I modded a political party to get +100% luck, just to see what would happen. This was on maso.

I didn't build any ships, but a few years in got a whole slew of rangers when the other races just had battleships. These dried up when all the rangers brought my military rating up to the point it was comparable to the other races'.

I also had an unusually high number of morality events but that may have been coincidence.

I didn't notice anything exceptional about anomalies or starting position. And there were no Precursor events in the game.

Someone out there must know exactly which calculations luck is involved in :notsure: . C'mon where are all those teenage hackers that have nothing better to do than play games and rip apart lines of code just to see how it works? :SURPRISED:

Hmmm.. just finished a third game playing the univeralists - all medium masos. Haven't noticed anything that seems lucky.... I'm dying to find a Ranger. I could really have put it to good use in my last game - Medium Maso Common - the Drendin had 7 systems when I met them - everyone else had 2-3 (and my third system was a PQ 14). It was touch and go for a long time...

After whining about it, I found three rangers in my last game. LOL
