Cure for homesickness: Go home

Ok, so tell me why college feels like such a complete waste of time. There are those who argue that just the fact that I am having these thoughts means I shouldn't be here in the first place. I am sure, at one point, college was only a place for those who wanted to persue further academic acheivement, but lets face it, 90 percent of us are going because someone told us we needed a peice of paper. America is a wonderful place, but damn, who are we kidding, we are fooling ourselves and wasting our precious time and money on "higher education". We have put a considerable ammount of emphasis on the MEANS and gradually moving away from the notion that there is more than one way to get to the ENDS.

Steps to life:
1. do well in 6th grade math, or you will not get into advanced math in 7th grade, then 8th, 9th, yada yada.... you fail now, you fail forever. *
2. get straight A's and score high on your SAT because you will fail at life if you don't do well on these.
3. Get in to college (permitting you did well on #2) and pay out the ass to do whatever the hell you want for 4 years minimum.
4. Get a damn peice of paper that says you are an "expert" at something. This paper now means you are no longer, nor ever will be a failure (note the sarcasm)
5. Get a job that you love and work there indefinatley to pay your bills on time.

5 steps... thats it fellas now... GO GET 'EM. Might I add, that "happiness", "fun" or "producvitiy" was NOT included in these steps.
So get started on wasting your life away to the standards of the greatest institution of the world... America.

Lesson of the week: Changing the entire world is impossible. But changing YOUR world is easy. One person usually encounters about 50-100 people on a regular basis throughout their lifetime. If you could change the minds of those 50-100 people that know you (and i mean KNOW you) then you have changed YOUR world. So if you arent happy with how the world is, Change YOUR world first, then bitch about the rest of the world not being like yours.

Quote of the week: Man is born free; and everywhere he is in chains - Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778)

Movie of the week: Bowling for Columbine- you don't have to agree with it, but it will make you think about America. ( * item #1, i stole from this movie)

Song of the week: I feel Home- O.A.R.

P.S. Good seeing some of you Stafford kids this weekend.

I can relate to homesickness and feeling like college is useless. If I had it to do over again, I would. I would just take it a lot less seriously. A degree matters but your GPA doesn't. College is for learning as much as you can both academically and socially. It is a relatively controlled situation for students to explore themselves and the world around them.

You are right. You can change your world but you do have to be realistic about the world around you. Most people can't just go from high school to a career. Where do they get training? Where do they get experience? How does a potential employer gauge their abilities?

It sounds like you need to focus on your major. You do have to waste time and money on useless classes that everyone is forced to take. I do think that needs to be changed. Good luck in your endeavors.

You seem so positive, and I find it very sad that you don't elicite as much responses as, let's say, Deleted. Hahah. We need more people like you. Trinitie
