Ctrl-n is over-rated!

My last 2 maso games I won without using ctrl-n. I just took what I got to start. I did this based on a thread started a while ago by Maxtipherous (see link here: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=96212#96685)

I am not trying to brag about my victories here, I just want to point out that I don't think the colonization phase is as important as I used to (and many others still) think. Yes, you are behind at first -- but it's very possible to come from behind and win without making a heroic effort. In fact, it's a lot more fun as well.
:CONGRAT:

edit: I also did not explore the map and reload. Again, I'm not trying to brag, just point out that some things that I once thought were cheese are really not needed and kind of irrelevent.

I find it tough to win on Maso without a good starting position.

It's basically other cheese for the Ctl-N cheese.

gods, I hope cheese doesn't become like easter eggs and spam. didja hear hornel is sueing an anti-spam company for using the name spam in their product?

my last maso win I had to restart because one of the AI's got way too strong too early, and I used the bribing "technique" to good effect early. Otherwise it is was by the book.

I look for two or three sectors with 2 or 3 18+ planets, preferably near the corner, close enough to colonize quickly. I also feel that planet quantity is less important than I used to. I do like isolation, though, because of weak cultural in the beginning.

Man, even after finishing a three-day game I am still looking forward to starting another. Gotta see if I can match ray's 60K!

I never use CtrlN. Tried it once or twice, but generally, I start with what I've got.
I believe that diplomacy is more important than starting position on maso.
I once got cornered in my starting sector by all other ai's (medium maso). I had tried to settle PQ 14 planets two sectors away from Sol (no PQ 15 outside my sector in range) but they started flipping immediately. So I sold them. The result was I had a good Sol sector, true, but no expansion at all. I got the ai's to be at war all against the others, and voila.
Now of course, when you start in a corner of the galaxy and don't meet anyone before they have traded techs with each others and you're way behind, it's quite probable the game is lost. Still, not trying is admitting defeat too early to my taste.

Unfortunately the EU has decided to do just that by claiming common words in use for centuries apply only to areas.... ie Burgandy wine (world wide generic for color) Swiss cheese (that's right they claim it isn't a style of cheese but always referred to where it came from. Gouda Cheese, Feta Cheese, Parmesian cheese. All on the list. I've never heard of such nonsense. Hopefully the rest of the world doesn't cave to this total nonsense like they did on champagne.

The Hormel suit was a bit more thought out although still rather stupid. They have given up stopping the use of the word, but object to having it capitalized and in the company name. On a side note I always find some of the evidence that champagne didn't actually originate there amusing.
