Ever Play Star Control?

It would be intersting if GalCiv (xpack) could implement that simple aspect of Star Control where you had to take certain planets in order to reach a set of other planets. It would add some strategy element to offense/defense in planet taking/defending. Of course, it could be toggled on and off. What do you think? :notsure:

Not really. As you recall, Star Control was more of a story/mystery based game. Once you solved it. No need to play it anymore. And SC2 was probably the best in the series... 3 was horrid.

Pontius,
Did you ever play the first one on the Sega Genesis?
That's more what I'm talking about. It was really more like a thirty planet galaxy where each planet had spines pointing to, say, five other planets you could move to from it. When opposing ships entered the same planet it went to a screen where the ships did one-to-one combat. A la Archon the chess game.

Yes, space lanes is an apt description. Anyway, it seems like it could be a fun option. I just like the idea having planets with strategic value (other than PQ and facilities).

hmmm.
It's coming together in my mind. Only the person in control of a planet would know which other planets it's connected to. The only option other than finding out through conquest would be to use espionage (low=random 25% revealed, moderate=random 60% revealed, high=100%).

I'd love to work on a Star Control IV.  SC 2 was my favorite game of all time.

Everyone says SC 2 was the best. Sadly, I never played it. It came out during my lengthy "poverty phase" of life.

FRUNGY! THE SPORT OF KINGS!!!

Star Control 2 was a lot of fun :)

As for SC1 - IIRC, it had fixed jump lanes, but no fuel limits, and there wasn't any way to sit in empty space between stars. It was fun, sure, but not letting people float in space would change the whole feel of GalCiv. The only way to build resource starbases would be to give them their own jump points to nearby planets.

If you can run old DOS games on your computer, I'm sure you could find SC1 and SC2 on an abandonwarez site (but downloading them would be illegal, of course). Otherwise, that port above is your best bet - though it's not 100% complete, it's still a lot of fun.

~Theoden nearly faints at the thought of that!~

SC3 wasn't made by the same designers that made 1 and 2, and it showed. I mean, making the Precursors COWS?? :CURSINGSMILEY: >:(

You know, the forums over at UQM are actually sort of similar to the Metaverse. Friendly banter, helpful vets, and of course, the devs (yes the actual devs, not the guys who are working on UQM) drop in and say hi.

If I hadn't played SC2 and UQM to death, I'd probably still be playing it. But how many times can you destroy the Sa-Matra? And if I have to hear those stupid Orz again, I'll have to *PARTY* at the *HAPPY CAMPERS*! ;)

I've put together design proposals on a SC IV.  Basically it had to do with the other dimension that one of the races (the one that spoke bizarrely) referred to bursting in.

*HEAVY* Space?! Now that would definitely kick butt! I always wanted the Arilou and Orz to fight. That would have been interesting.

Erm...wait, isn't this the GalCiv forum? LOL

Nnnnngghhh! Orz are not stupid! I am *frumpled*. It is time to *squeeze the juice*!

That proposal sounds very interesting - I can think of quite a few loose ends in SC2 involving that dimension...

Toys for Bob are doing a port of SC2 to the modern W2K world. Supposedly for free. Some of the originals are supposed to be working it.

Go check it out for yourself.

Oh. If you want to play Star Lanes, GalCiv type game, find an old game called Acsension. I like that game quite a bit. Nice alien races in it as well.

The problem of star lanes is that it effectively limits everyone on how they can move. Great for the AI, but a bit boring for humans. Most Star Lane games do not allow you to go "off road", but a few odd ones do. Changes the feel of the game greatly, and one of the many things I dislike in MoO3, as it really changed the level of possibilities and strategy in the series.

More interesting change for GalCiv would be terraforming ships that let you move a world up by a +1PQ per use (one time and then the terraformer is "consumed").

Star Pilot,

The link to the TFB port is in reply #8 above. It's called The Ur-Quan Masters, because legally they can't call it Star Control 2 (Accolade...or whoever they got bought out by...owns the name and rights to the game).

On a side note, before I bought GalCiv, I played UQM all the way through 3 times. It's very stable and very enjoyable!

I'm a big fan of Starcontrol 2, but I think we have an equally interesting universe with GalCiv.

Hmmm now if only there was a game like Starcontrol 2 set in the GalCiv Universe, I certainly think Stardock has the talent and sense of humour for it ;).

It is good to meet so many enlightened beings here that are able to bask in the memory of Star Control 2. It is THE classic SF game of the nineties, overshadowing even Starflight.
It is one reason (of many) why I never got rid of my old Pentium 166 with DOS.

Here's a tip for all of you SC2 veterans: There's a beautiful little game extensively named "Strange Adventures in Infinite Space". It manages to reproduce a little of the SC2 feeling. In fact it's kind of a mini game. Explore the galaxy in 20 minutes or less. It's really just wonderful, and a bargain at 15 bucks.
(No, I don't have any relations to the publisher. Don't look at me this way.)

Here's my first pitiful attempt to link to a page:

As for a game with star lanes, it would be interesting to do a strategy game with a star system like the inter-system of Freelancer. Lanes can give you a large speed advantage but they can be disrupted and you can go off lane to get to obscure places or to come in from an unexpected approach. Would also make defense interesting since most would concentrate defenses on the lanes but would need mobile forces for the flanks. Ascendency did have disruptable lanes which was amusing/annoying depending if you were the disrupted because travel could take quite a while and it bumped the ship caught in the lane back to its starting point.
