Hmm, I would have to agree with Develper f0r3, C++, to my knowledge is still used quite a bit. Windows isn't the only OS that is out there, and .NET is very targeted towards Windows. Although it can be a little challenging, if you are interested in learning and using it, I doubt very much that any knowledge gained would be useless. (Although I would stay away from Pascal, Cobol and the likes!) M$oft would like everyone to switch to .NET, but I don't see that happening for a long time, take DoctorNicks advice - there are quite a few good introductions to programming that come with compilers, browse your local (or semi-local) bookstore and see which one is written in a manner that you like.
