OT: PBEM Role Playing

Anyone on this board has any experience running PBEM role playing games as the game master?

It's a great concept of running a traditional RPG game but through a forum much like this one. Very simply, the GM posts the scenarios/adventure and the players would post their actions, conversations, etc. The GM does all the dice rolling and resolutions in the background.

We already have people on this board who have expressed an interest to participate as players but we need someone who would be willing to be the GM. Of course, it would be best if the GM has experience with this mode of RPG.

Any takers? :)

I'll help Mexal post continuations of the adventure whenever possible. In the above, Phalanx cast a Charm spell on the press gang leader and Gordeleth talked us out of a fight.

The galcivers in the adventure currently are:

Tunal, Human Male Figher - LDiCesare
Sol, Human Male Monk - kyrofx
Jimmy, Human Male Rogue - Ray the Wanderer
Lugh, Elf Male Ranger - Solitair
Gordeleth, Human Male Ranger - Gordeleth
Phalanx, Elf Male Wizard - bpleshek
Argelidon, Human Male Wizard - vincible

Alex,

That's actually Mexal's post which I reproduced here. Most of us have responded already. :)

Evil Steve and Idleprocess are lurking in our YahooGroups where you can see more of the action, ie. all the player responses.

Give a shout if you are interested to lurk.

I'm actually quite surprised at how fast the game is moving already, and quite pleased...

I was expecting it would go a lot slower but this is great :D

Perhaps after this call for lurkers we should let the thread die. Presumably anyone who would be interested in reading it would have asked to be added to the mailing list.

OK - she pointed it out to me (quite forcefully I hasten to add - does anyone have a cure for an impacted rolling pin?).

I was more afraid that the thread would turn into another interactive fiction one, and I hadn't realised how quickly she'd managed to turn the turn around.

I'd suggest leaving it open - I'm sure that Mexal could be persuaded to post results if asked nicely - and it might get some other people interested for future games.

Mexal,

bakka is interested to lurk, can you tell him how?

I'm think it's good to post Mexal's stories on this thread for reading enjoyment.
It's also a good advert to attract new players.

Bakka will be welcome to lurk or to join in.

I would like to point out that Dearly Beloved is exaggerating, the rolling pin is still in the drawer...

As for turn speed, too many e-mail games get kinda stuck. Thought it would be better to go at a good pace.

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM

The turn speed is great. We are certainly moving along. :)

I personally feel that we can proceed to the next turn once a few of us have responded.
The onus then is on the players to check in regularly.

JordanVmp,

Are you still joining us for this game? We are looking for a cleric to round off our party.

Sorry, I told Mexel I would lurk for the time being. I'll try to join it in a bit, but I got swamped at work and other real life crap. I even went over a week without a galciv game!

But ha, I won a damn maso game last night. Everyone is right, tiny/rare/maso is pretty easy. (I was trying to play on a large map the last time I attempted it)

I've got a vacation in a couple weeks, and then I'll see where I am time wise after that and where the game is. I actually can't post from work, so if the game stays at such a fast pace (though they usually always start off like this then slow down), there's no way I'd be able to keep up anyway.

Good job with the Maso win. Maso is quite a different game. Try other map sizes and settings as well.

No worries about not being able to join yet.

Hey, is it common to share a character in PBEM RPGs? I'm thinking two persons who don't have the time to be very regular can share control of one character.

No, I've never seen it done actually, besides the GM taking over when the player is slacking. Kind of an interesting idea, but I think it would be hard to implement correctly, since posting styles vary so greatly.

I'm currently playing a small maso. I was getting eaten alive by Torian influence until the Fundamentalists showed up and took their closest planet. :) Now I should be fine.

I'll just move my way up to large. I've never liked the maps above large on any level (they get too tedious for me), so I doubt I'll get that far on maso.

i'm following as much as i can, but don't have the time to put me hand up as a cleric - could share though if'n anyone else is up for it. i iz on oz time of course,so that might be an impediment to smoothness

:)

Anyone want to share a cleric with a split personality with Evil Steve? That ought to be fun. :)

I think different time zones is an advantage for sharing because the character can be played at different times by each player.

i'll have to switch my email from work to home (mexal?). also i've has trouble logging on to the yahoo group - when it says 'type in the name of the picture' i don't see anything....

:sniff!:

Evil Steve, I split my email work/home (which actually means week/week-end). I can't reach the groups from work, but overall it's possible to follow through the mails only. The problem being you have to reorder some of them as you can get the reply before the original post sometimes (in which cases I wonder whether I'm hallucinating or womething).

Just a random lurker here, but couple of ideas for running one char with two people: The 'Hat of Difference' from 1st edition AD&D (believe it was in Unearthed Arcana) which allowed char to be another class as long as it was worn which would make things truly odd since technically same char, but different class and so may behave differently in order to accomplish things, or another option is something like a possession where the true char happened to be in the wrong place at wrong time while someone was trying a desperate reincarnation spell or such. Could work in something like the ego wrestling with an intelligent sword.

Plain schizophrenia would be enough of a reason. Of course, the DM can always come up with a backstory as to why the schizophrenia is there, and the character(s) would try to know where it comes from and get rid of it.

so iz anyone volunteering for a skitzo cleric?

maybe i could just do it. (with a backup brief for mexal)

if i can move my email from work to

[email protected]

the i can pick the moves up at work and home

sigh, more reasons not to do something constructive like home renovation

;)

Why don't you just create the character and start first, Evil Steve?

We have been talking about having player scripts for inactive players. You can have some combat, magic or healing scripts prepared so that your character doesn't just stand around if you are unable to log on for a while.
