Pirates and space sharks - anybody seen them lately?

Clicking the Fist icon under relations, I can see all the AI is in war with Space Sharks and Pirates. Who are these guys?? Havent seen any of them in my games yet (:(
We once got the prison ourbreak but unfortunately those guys did not show up either.

Do these attractions really exist in the current version?!

Or does it need to be some much later year first before they appear?

By the way, would be great if these minor wars were also somehow indicated in the Treaties window. I always forget to check that fist icon.

Good question. I haven't seen sharks since a much earlier version of the game.
In my last game an event said that pirates were attacking shipping, but I never saw any.

I love the blurb on the game box, which says:
"SPACE MONSTERS Galactic Space Monsters and other random events provide your ships with experience points and training prior to going to war."

Oh really? Was that the original intent of space monsters, or did the blurb writer get carried away?

I had sharks, pirates, and prison riot all in my last submitted game. Besides the sharks, they were not much more than a nuisance.

Newbie Hint: Space Sharks are very dangerous no matter how strong you are. Nothing is worse than watching trained battleships, and even dreadnaughts, get wasted by the squirming red death...especially when you are at war. >:(

Wow sounds cool. Do they take starbases down also? How can you get rid of them, or do they just disappear eventually?

They attack everything and everybody until destroyed. If they appear in an enemy territory, many times the AI will destroy them before you ever see them.

As far as starbases, I'm sure they attack them, but I've never seen it myself.

That's by default for all AIs.

They do exist in 1.05 but they are extremely rare. I've met sharks in only once in the 50 odd games I've played.

They are much more common in 1.09 though.

I've found that the space sharks only appear once the fundamentalists have taken over some evil lords planets. they seem to originate from there.. So park your strongest ships by each of the fundamentalists planets set it to auto attack, and its come and meet the Jaws of your doom.... dummm dum. dummm dum. dum dum dum dum dum dum.

Hmm...I've had sharks about 3 of my 12 games (all 1.05). I have prison breakout almost every game. I had the Fundamentalists wipe out the Yor a couple of games back (took every single system...they just ceased to exist! :HOT: ) It seems things happen in my games all the time! :D

Haven't had any Rangers found in a while... :( not even any Corvettes. Really missing that event in my current game. I see another Yor slaughter coming.. >:(

In the new expansion pack there is a new space anomaly which results in a space shark. This means that early in the game there can be a number of frigate strength space sharks wandering about. Livens things up

Sharks tend to target a single ship or starbase and chase it around until destroyed. This can be used to lead a shark to destroy enemy starbases! Very useful. Later in the game sharks can appear as a random event or escape from a space zoo. They are always more powerful than your most powerful ship so take lots of effort to destroy.

Pirates are a bit more rare. They can appear as a random event (toned down since early versions) or from the escaped convicts event. They always appear in pirate type ships (battle cruisers, etc) and so are much more dangerous in early game than late game. Only a few usually appear at a time (toned down from early versions where 10's would appear).

Paul.

In the game I just finished (v1.05) I had the Pirates. Thier "corvettes" had 349 hitpoints but luckily they start with less than 10 and have to build up over time.

Cant help but another WIBNI coming to mind here: Positive Impact Aliens. Some weird and wonderful creatures that when you meet them they boost your planet, starbase, or trade route. Maybe get one of these helpers only if playing good. Maybe as a result of an earlier UP vote.

Well, I got Space Sharks again...

Also got the Fundamentalists taking the Yor and Drengin completely out of the picture. The Yor had 3 systems and the Drengin had 1 when all was said and done. Apparently the Arceans were spared the devastation, while the Torians only had one system to begin with. :SURPRISED:

This has been a very interesting game. The start was very competitive, but now events have kind of trashed everything. The Altarians are powerful, but I've destroyed their economy by tech whoring, so they can't compete with me militarily or with TG/Wonders. Don't really know what to do besides string the Altarians along, while I research the crap out of everything. Kind of hate to end the game before I even get Battleships. :notsure:

Hmmm, sounds like I simply need to play some more and wish for the best. Just being unlucky I guess, or simply missing the action as I havent had too many ships out in my recent culture games anyway.

Finish game before Battleships are out - that is quite an achievement:CONGRAT: Would be great to know the quickest games out there for each level and galaxy size.

Hehe...actually, I have researched Battleships, but I just haven't built any yet. :)

I'm on Challenging/Huge/Uncommon, All AIs Pure Evil but the Altarians, who are Chaotic Good.

My game is not the quickest, by far. I don't particularly like quick games. That's why I usually play Huge galaxies.

I still see some monsters in 1.05. Not very often, though.

But I would think the sightings would be a lot higher since everytime someone looks at the Metaverse, the pirate gang with the space shark seems to stand out quite prominently... :HOT:

(Gerakken ducks out of sight to avoid the thrown objects.)

Well this is cool....but also tougher than any single game decision! Too many options out there!!! :sniff!: :sniff!: Whats most likely to happen now is that I'll keep swapping names to no end for a while now.....very sorry for that...at least you been warned.

Cant make mind up on the real question either, not just yet. The Fellowship members have been absolutely tremendous contributors and helpers all over the place here. Simply for that reason alone one should always seriously consider them. But is it really enough in the end, thats the tough part! Have to admit that we very nearly flipped already!!! :D :D :D

Can not say much more at the moment. We will see how things play out! The force is strong and the mind is willing. Loved the fellowship saga too, mind boggling stuff.

No pressure, Andreas/Yours Truly/jn64!

Join who you feel the most comfortable with. The Jedi are a good empire, and very active.

I like the Finn nick...you should stick with that one!
