PLEASE HELP! LITE STEP. S.O.S.

You should have done more studying and researching Litestep before running it.
But anyways, if you used the version that came as an installable version (i.e. didn't just unzip to your HD), if you go to the Litestep folder, somewhere in there there's a small app that will let you switch back to the regular explorer shell.
Once you use that, reboot and you'll be back up and running again.

1. Goto http://www.shellfront.org/
2. Click the "shell utilities" link in the right navigation panel
3. Click win2kinstaller.zip to download the installer/uninstaller
4. Uzip the file and run the installer.exe file thats included
5. Select uninstall from the program when it loads up
6. Reboot

Btw, it looks like litestep isn't even running based on your screenshot (either that or it couldn't find a theme). The easiest way to get started on LS is with the LSInstaller: http://beyondconvention.net/ohussain/lsinstaller/

Looks like you're not running any shell whatsoever.

The under-the-hood method of fixing things, which could kill your machine if you fuck up:

1) Navigate to c:\windows and run regedit.exe. This gives you access to the Registry, the database in which Windows stores all its settings.

2) Within regedit, navigate to these three lccations (using the tree listing on the left) and check if the value for "Shell" (which should show up on the right) says "Explorer.exe":

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

If they don't, change them to it (double click on the "Shell" entry and enter "Explorer.exe" as its value). If there is no "Shell" entry, no need to create one, just move on to the next location.

3) Once you've changed the locations, reboot. Things should be fixed.


For reference, the lines should look like:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"Shell"="explorer.exe"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

"Shell"="explorer.exe"

damn u guys are awesome, thanks for the resuce! everything is back to normal. turns out a system restore and a reboot did the trig after running control panel.

i resetup and i think im actually getting quite good with lite step now that i learned my lesson

if litestep ever crashes or fails to run CTRL/ALT/DEL ,task manager,new task, explorer.exe will bring up the default windows desktop..

HG-E.....most times....sometimes you may just get the 'Explorer' file manager instead.

Either way, you can then access your system to correct things.

Once you get used to alternate shell use, you'll not even have any qualms about running without one at all.....I often do that when overwriting LS system files, etc...

I must apologize in absentia. I saw the posted jpeg and fell out of my chair laughing so hard. Now bare with me, I laughed because I had a similar experience, way back in the Days, before there was an installer, and the manual regedit was needed to fix things. Now I am probably showing my age. I feel your pain tekn0, and am glad you got it sorted out.
