What brand have you found to be the most quiet and fastest.
I am looking into Maxtor from what info I have found on-line but I would like your opinions.

I have a Western Digital and a Maxtor in the same machine.......never heard either one of them,even with the side off.All I hear is the fan.

Soundwise the quietest is an old Seagate model. But the Samsung SpinPoint series appear to have taken over that crown, while at the same time providing good performance, so I bought me one of those and set it to "quiet".

Can't say I hear it spinning, but then again, can't hear anything over the noise my old 40G Maxtor makes.

I have in Love with SEAGATE BARACOADA (S-ATA & ATA) and cheeatah (SCSI). The ONE and The Best....

I used to have Maxtor but the problem I had faced was "BAD Sectors."

2 WD's ....had a bit of bad luck with the last two Maxtors....both did the big kibbie after about a year....previous Maxtors I had, I had no problems with. The plan is for the next 2 to be Seagate S-ATA's

I have always had real good performance and service from Western Digital's.
Been thinking about getting two SATA 10,000 RPM WD's.

Thank you all so much for the input. Maxtor's ultra sounds like the way to go. Looking into a couple of 160's. I do believe I will wait for a sale though. I have noticed most drives go to just about half price at that time.

either WD or maxtor are comperable .. i prefer maxtor of the two ..the new slim design gives better air flow between drives in the bay ..... seagate is tops .. if ya got the $ they are the way to go... they just plain rock .. and seagate is one of the oldest names in Hdds around ...

I bought a Maxtor 160 GB in April for $99.95 and another in May for $89.95 (Staples). Had to RMA 1 of them (heads locked up) Maxtor replaced it with a 200 GB.

Keep an eye out for sales.

I have a Maxtor 40 gig.. can't hear it at all. never had a problem with it even under heavy stress and usage. Most of what you hear in my comp is the noisy rear fans.. remind me to switch to newer, quieter fans and a water cooled setup..

Two SATA 250 GB Western Digital, configured for a RAID 0. Quiet and very fast. All that I can hear is the Jet 4 Fan
