Hello everyone! I'm a big fan of program skins and everything that comes with it and i must say I love this site, however, today I have a problem.

I was browsing through the site like I do every once in a while and noticed the "suite" section. While browsing there I noticed a nice OS X suite and decided to try it out. I hence downloaded "ThemeManager" and tried installing the suite, but before it let me it asked me to install all the other programs needed, so I did as it asked. The suite was up and everything was working wonderfully, I must congratulate whoever put everything together. But then I got a problem, I, not being familiar with mac's, unloaded everything and after some thought decided to stick to just using windowblinds and keeping everythign else the same. To do this i successfully uninstalled every program that I had installed.... but now I have a weird bug on my desktop. When I try to drag an icon, the drag messes up, and even more, I cannot put two icons next to each other.... look at the following screenshot:

The red arrows show where the icon is normally and where it should be, and if you take a look at the cursor you will understand the problem. I am 99.99% sure this comes from one of the programs I got from here due to the fact that I haven't installed anythign for a while and that the bug didn't exist 10 minutes ago.

I also tried rebooting twice.... that didn't work. Please someone help me as it is very frustrating!

it sounds to me that the Default Icons are not stored in the C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Icons directory or they have lost their association....

dunno how or why that would happen unless something else was running which interacted and caused things to go blewy

...........

there should be a restore point from before Theme Manager and or IconPacker were installed which would restore them to default no mater what, unless you have restore points turned off for some reason. wouldn't know why with an 80 gig drive though..

IPlural, could trying to do a system restore/goback with XP without the disk? I had to do that the first time I installed ODesktop, me was way out a my league and the comp let me go back to a date before I did the install.

When I reinstalled the stuff, I had learned not to do what I did the first time, so haven't had problem since then!

there isn't a point before any stardock program, but there is one from where i installed something else, do I just do that?

hmmm what can i say.... this system restore feature is great Its working now, on the desktop the icon gets messed up when i drag still.... but not NEARLY as much as it was before and i cna stick icons next to each other and move them freely! Only downside is i have to reinstall some stuff but thats it

Also... what does system restore...restore? I see that my files are still here... so what exactly was restored?

I think it just restores your main configuration to what it was before you installed whatever software caused the problem. However, I ain't the comp genius here, Mr. IPlural or Mr. Yrag could explain it much better than me!

IPlural, thanks SO much for your help, I could have gone crazy.... but this isn't such a bad experience... this system restore can come in handy! *adds it down to list of useful things to do*

Anyways, i'll keep browsing this site, looks like it has a lot to offer! (currently using a Mac OSX-ish windowblind... this rocks)

glad one of us could help

there are some seriously fantastic themes, icons, cursors, skins on the site for sure.

I have a setup for this laptop which confuses the heck out of people when I boot it up, they wonder how I can run Jaguar Brushed Aluminum Graphite on a AMD 64 +3200...

all the way down to the bootscreen, logon, sounds and cursors...

there are even more creative ones on the site and you can find just about any style you could hope for.

I ran ad-aware when you told me and it didnt find anything, spybot now found some stuff but im guessing i just got this right now (was in some dodgy website lol)


I never said run ad-aware, I said run Spybot. And when you ran it, "it found some stuff". Don't guess now my firend, I hope you removed "the stuff".

I also asked you to press crtl-alt-delete, press the performance tab and read your available physical memory. It's in the lower right corner of the performance tab window. If your physical memory gets low, you will have trouble opening multiple windows, your cursor my stagger, and dragging icons maybe difficult too. The redrawing of the icons while they are being moved uses resources.

Since you have low memory and visual problems, I would recommend reducing the visual effects on your desktop. This might help too. Get there by clicking startmenu-control panel-system-advanced-performance settings. You may want to adjust that setting for best performance, but you can experiment with the settings and options there.

System Restore is a decent emergency fix. But, your programs installed after the restore point will have to be re-installed. Windows update may need to be re-installed. Driver updates may need to be reinstalled. I prefer a clean system than a patched up system myself. I've had a lot of registry crashes because of system restore. It sounds like you've patched things up for awhile. Good Luck.

NingcManiac....probably a good idea is to experiment with GUI customizing a little at a time.

Try Windowblinds, for example...get used to what it does/can do....then try Iconpackager....get used to that....then move on.

It's far wiser to walk before you run....

Automatic updates can cause a world of problems too. Especially if you install MWD drivers on top of non-MWD drivers. I hope you have that function disabled.

true, I was speaking more of using restore points

but then again, all of us learn new things at different times with things we have spent working with from their begining.

Heck I still think.feel plug and pray was/is the worst thing that happened to the PC..

I remember reading some where that the icon cache size can affect the way icons are displayed and even affect the way they are placed (side by side) ... just a thought.

when this happened on a friend's machine a few months ago, i installed tweak ui (the ms powertoy) and repaired the icon cache.
