George Carlin.. easily my favorite. Kevin James [saw him standup once on Comedy Central] is ALSO a favorite. Love 'em both to bits.

For dry - one liner humour I guy I saw do a 1hr stand up years ago on telly still sticks in my mind and thats Steven Wright.

Billy Connolly, Eddie Izzard or Bill Bailey - not so much tellers of jokes more anecdotal/observational/surreal and masters of the rambling ad lib

for a really oddball type of comedy, it has to be Heywood Banks. Larry the Cable Guy, Rodney Carrington, and John Fox are equally as funny but more conventional. who doesn't love the Fred song by Carrington? and then there's Bob Zany, a guy whose jokes you may not grasp until 4 days later

Best modern standup comics in my opinion: George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Robin Williams, Steven Wright, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Denis Leary, D.L. Hughley, Billy Connolly, Eddie Izzard, Richard Lewis, Drew Carey, Brett Butler, Louie Anderson.

From earlier times, I'd have to agree with Red Skelton, and Jack Benny. Also Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, Freddie Prinze, Dick Gregory, Johnathan Winters, Phyllis Diller, Don Rickles, and Flip Wilson.

I agree with all of #7 (WOM's) but would add Benny Hill (deceased now) and Billy Connolly, & Dave Allen (ol' stumpyfinger)

I like different comedians for different reasons.
Dry,thinking humour-John Cleese
Story style humour- Bill Cosby,Gracie Allen(my all time favorite ever)
Edgy and cynical humour-George Carlin
unfit for mixed company humour- Rodney Carrington(you can't stop laughing no matter how embarrassing the subject)
silly giggle till you wet yourself humour- Bill Engval
zany slapstick, odd situational humour-Lucille Ball,Charlie Chaplin no one can ever match the comedy these two created.
I guess , like I said before If I had to pick just one, it'd be Gracie Allen.Her timing was flawless and her deadpan way of delivery was unmatchable.
