The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I'm happy to see you still playing and having fun. I haven't been around lately, but I just wanted to stop in and say hi.

:D Thanks :D

Can I try to convince people to download my mods and then respond in my mod threads while I'm in here, too? :HOT:

Don't read this thread for a couple of days and see what happens!

Theoden,

I'm very happy your family is alright and that the recovery has begun. People who drink should keep it in the house, not on the road. Like me.

Good to hear from you philopoemen. :D

What's keeping you busy nowadays?

Admiral Sherbert,

Sure. Tell us the attraction behind your mods. :)

Theoden said on a strategy thread:

What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
What do you mean? An African or European swallow?
End of quote

I had to go watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail (for about the 30th time). It's your fault Theoden but it is hard to go more than a few months without watching one of the world's funniest (some might say "silliest") movies. LOL.

One of my favorites about Gal Civ diplomacy is the "wise-guy" comment from the aliens and one of my favorite is from Drengin Lord Kona when you pester him during "cool" relations.

Good snarf, what do you want? There's a game on I really want to watch.
End of quote

I just about fell out of my chair the first time I read that. LOL.

OK . . . well . . .it's time to go watch that game (American college football: Oregon vs. Utah). Later . . . :D

Submitted my game. Have to thank Cotal for reminding me that I don't have to max out everything to get the top score of 60k.

However, I seriously think Stardock will nerf diplomacy or at least make it more expensive. I'm sure they will find most if not all of the Maso players loading up on diplomacy. It's almost like the PQ+15 times.

I'll make this short:
Baby on the way
New apartment
New job
Insane mother & father

Other then that, it's been pretty quiet ;)

I just saw Life of Brian for the first time last night. Those Monty Python people sure don't believe in nice endings.

Agreed. Frogboy mentioned somewhere (in the chat log maybe?) that he would like to revamp the diplomacy system from the current "value-based" system, so that the AI looked more at the value of a particular item to itself. A diplomacy nerf could easily be incorporated into that.

I don't think we will see a revamped system before at least 1.2. Likely GC2.

The attraction behind my mods? I don't know, just something intresting.

The 'Weather Control Pack' includes a PQ and a soldiering bonus, along with a couple of other things. Mainly, I'm looking for input as to what people would like to see, having already looked at my mod.

Whenever Stardock gets around to it, I should also have a 'Jedi Council' mod, which is a new government choice. I'm also thinking about submitting another mod with more governments.

Amusing. I pop over to the GROSS thread to bug them and make a bit of a Holy Grail reference, then come here and find it as a topic. I have to be a junky considering my name.

There are those who call me...Tim.

Can this thread be divided or started anew? It takes forever to load through my 56K modem (I've finally managed to get to page 82 once after a lot of failed attempts. So if I haven't responded to your bon mots on pp 83 on, it's only because I haven't read them.)

Valid concern, Bolger.

Though this thread does have a lot of history and sentimental value, I'm all for starting a new thread to facilitate more participation from everyone.

If nobody objects, I will start another thread soon.

I don't think the size of the thread is the only issue at work here. Stardock's servers in general seem quite a bit slower than they used to be, particularly in the past week. I'm on a cable modem, and it often takes 30-45 seconds and two tries to open brand new threads, let alone this one and Threadzilla. Hopefully, this is an indication of more traffic around here.

Fine with me. Everyone take note of Ray's Maso Tiny Walkthrough on post #1916. But, I think Ray also put that in the strategy section under the maso strategies thread, is that right Ray?

Medium and large masos, very nice Rick! Those are the hardest map sizes imo.
End of quote
.

Vincible, they are harder than tiny/small for me because one has to make scouts plus it takes longer to meet aliens to swap tech and and set up trade routes. That delay can mean an alien can get friendly with another alien before you produce adequate bribes so you can't shut down that trade route by bribing to war. On my tiny/small games there were no alien to alien trade routes once I got the hang of it but on medium and small there was one each game I couldn't break. It didn't turn out to be a decisive as I feared though.

I don't really like the huge and gigantic maps because the whole galaxy strategy map at 100% doesn't help much at these sizes so it is harder for me to follow the game. Do some think huge & gigantic are easier on maso than medium & large? Why is that? Thanks.

Rick

PS The wrist tendonitis is a little better so I will watch more football and maybe can get back to playing the gal civ game this week . . . with more breaks this time. :D

PPS I have cable modem too and I agree everything is slower, which I hope indicates more traffic but this thread and threadzilla (GROSS) still take longer to open than the shorter threads on the forum. I suppose we could put a link to the blog and continue the FOTR thread there. Would that speed things up or unload some servers? Whatever works is fine with me.

Actually I don't think that would much help, as at least for me joeuser is just about as slow as galciv.com is. Both are much slower than most other sites. I get the feeling that stardock's network is just nearing its limit...

Good morning everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! It's back to the grind today...

Rick, thanks! And congrats to you for Admiral! WTG! :CONGRAT:

I think we definitely need a new thread. Balrog has outgrown his cave.

Well, I'm pretty frustrated with the game today. I decided to drop back and play a Huge/Crippling yesterday. I got a good start and everything was going great. I kept my maximum diplomatic picks and all the AIs seemed to stay off my back. Fearing an anomalous score (because I seemed to be doing so well), I kept retiring to see if I still had points. Well, I got cocky and didn't do it for a while. When I did decide to, it came up as anomalous and I didn't have a save game that wasn't anomalous. >:( >:( >:( >:(

Look, I'm clearly not an expert player and I was amazed at how well I was doing on a Huge/Crippling. It really, really disappoints me that I wasted a couple of hours just because I was doing too well in a game that was clearly over my skill level. Anomalous scores shouldn't be quite so easy to get, in my opinion. They work great for weeding out ppl who are modding or using the cheat codes, but what about those of us out there who are playing games with a genuine desire to improve ourselves? Do I have to play Masochistic now for the rest of my game playing? I don't really want to do that...

I guess I'm just upset that a Crippling game would come up as anomalous. Just ignore my rantings, there's really not much any of us can do but hope we don't trip the mysterious anomalous flag and get penalized for doing slightly well in a game. :(

I'll start a new thread soon.

Theoden - hope the family is recovering well. I think you are right to be dismayed to get an anomalous on Crippling; I can only think you tripped the 'excess cash' flag but you'd have to be doing amazingly well on Crippling to do that?! I appreciate Stardock wished to squash the 'cranking' but this seems over the top - do you recall your best cash balance in the game? Maybe send the file to Stardock for analysis?

Well done on the previous maso win though! :CONGRAT:

Wombie,

I think the best I did was around 20,000 BCs. Yes, I don't know how I was doing it, but I was doing very, very well. I just kept bribing the AIs to go to war with each other and then sent colony ships everywhere. I was colonizing PQ14 planets like crazy! I figured I needed to get as much influence as I could.

I may finish the game and not submit it, but send it to Cari and ask her to see what I did wrong (or what tripped the Anomalous flag).
