Desktop icon's can no longer be placed under rolled up folder portals after upgrade from V3 to V6

I've been a very happy user of fences but now i've upgraded from V3 to V6 i noticed that V6 does not allow me to place desktop icons (partially) under the rolled up folder portals snapped to the top of my desktop.
This leave a full icon row of my desktop unusable. I use this space for temporary files that shouldn't be on my desktop long and this way they don't take up a lot of space but are still in my sight.

Is there a way to fix this in V6?

If not I would like to request a refund for the purchase of V6 and i'll keep using V3.

This is my icon spacing:

"IconSpacing"="-1125"
"IconVerticalSpacing"="-975"

Hello,

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue. I understand there are differences in layout control between Fences v3 and v6, especially with the introduction of the new Layout Engine. This change was made after many users reported icons being hidden behind Fences, so the newer version ensures desktop icons are moved away from behind a Fence.

I’ve forwarded your question to the Stardock Support Team for further assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for updates. We truly appreciate your feedback and patience.

Thank you.

Hi Roy, this is the current intended functionality, but we'd be glad to look more into more fine tuning this algorithm. As is, we improved the algo for making sure icons didn't get covered up, which was a common support problem, but some of it may have gone too far.

Could you share more about whether you have auto-arrange on, grid on, etc? Looks like you're hoping for specifically: "docked to edge" rolled up groups would not block out icons? Wondering if you're thinking non-docked-to-edge rolled up groups would also push icons out of the way, i.e. if you had a 2nd rolled up group slightly below the one you've shown there. Would that 2nd group push icons out of the way, but just not "docked to top"?

Thanks for the insight.

In the meantime, I'd recommend the refund if this is functionality you need, but perhaps this is something that can be improved for later-v6 or future versions.

Hi,

I do not have auto-arrange on, but i do have grid on on my desktop. I'm basically trying to optimize my desktop space (even though i want to keep it as clean as possible).

Yes indeed, this is what i was hoping for and what V3 does correctly: ""docked to edge" rolled up groups would not block out icons".

I reinstalled V6 to test how a 2nd group would function the way you mentioned it, but that also doesn't help me. So i reinstalled V3 back again.

How do I now move further with the refund?

I will keep an eye on future updates to see if this functionality is added back in or maybe even a switch to select they V6 or V3 functionality (I'll call it that for ease).

For refund, please raise support ticket using the link below, use the "Refund" option. Include all information details. Remember to record down the ticket number for future reference if needed. Do not raise multiple ticket, that will make your ticket back to the end of the line. Send once and wait. Ticket will be answer by the order they send in.

Hi Roy thanks again for the suggestion.

This has been added for the next version, upcoming, v6.53, which is likely hitting beta later this week. If you've already been refunded, happy to share a link here so that you can give it a try. It's not in the UI, but settings for the option is at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Fences\Settings
(DWORD) AllowAutoArrangeUnderDockedGroups = 1

0 = current default, 1 ignores groups docked to top during auto-arrange, 2 ignores groups on both top and bottom.

We'll have to consider if this is something we want to adjust by default an/or where/if we might want to surface the option in the UI. Hope this helps!

Oh Wow, this is great, that was very fast! I would never have expected that :)

I'd be happy to test this in the v6.53 beta with the regsitry key. If that works as I expect it will I'm going to repurchase once this change hits production.

I see you mention auto-arrange, but does that also work without using auto-arrange? I can see why you'd want to fix it for auto-arrange for sure and that's why you'd wantt ocall the key that way, but i'd like it to work with auto-arrange turned of as well since i'm not using it.

Always looking to make the app better!

Yup yup, applies to grid as well, which is a problem subset of auto-arrange at a technical implementation level, but yes ideally we find a place for it in the UI itself in plain english.

Will do!
