The default Windows 11 Start menu now larger and cannot be resized.
The past few weeks, Microsoft has been rolling out a new update for Windows 11 that makes the Start menu bigger in nearly every way. While the company has made more changes to its recommendation section, the bigger issue this time around is that it is simply, bigger.
While some may have fond memories of the Windows 8 Start screen, this is slightly different. The new default Start menu experience on Windows 11 is now significantly larger and it’s not just our opinion, many others think so too.
It’s not that bigger isn’t necessarily better, it’s that you can’t make the default Start menu the previous size which means you are stuck with a menu that takes up more screen real estate and are once again locked into the whimsical maneuvers of whatever Microsoft has decided is the “flavor of the week”.

Start11 Pro Start menu, resizable, configurable, and fully customizable.
Start11, besides offering a number of different styles of menus like Windows 10 or a modernized style of Windows 7 or a personal favorite, the Pro style, gives you nearly unlimited configuration options including the size of the menu.
As you would expect in 2026, if you want to resize the Start menu, you hover your mouse near the edge and then you can grab the edge and make the menu the exact size you desire. I prefer a smaller menu size as it means less distance for my mouse to travel when I need to click an item.
But we know that Start11 is about making the Start experience fit your preferences, not what someone else decides is good for your desktop.
If you haven't tried Start11 yet, you can learn more about the app here and like all of our apps, it’s included in the award-winning suite, Object Desktop.
