Display icon names in the start menu

Hi,

Is there a way to permanently display the icon names in the Start11 “Windows 10 style” start menu? I mean the name that shows when I hover the mouse pointer over the icon.

I have a lot of icons on my start menu where the icon is not specific to the shortcut destination (eg websites). Some of them have the same icon but do different things.

Although I can hover the mouse pointer over the icon to see the name, it would be so much more useful if they were just permanently labelled – like the Windows 10 and 11 standard start menus.

I notice in the right click sub menu for an icon, there is a setting to “Hide caption”. This is not selected for any of my start menu icons. It doesn’t seem to make any difference if I select this or not. Maybe this setting has some other function and has nothing to do with displaying the icon names?

Thanks

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Have you tried, setting the icons size to Medium?

Thank you,

Did you perhaps use strange colors in the start menu? The icon names are displayed by default. If you hide the names, they will be displayed when you hover over them with the mouse.

Except for “Pin website...”, “Pin folder...” or “Pin file...”, where the mouse-over display of the name does not work when the names are hidden.

Can you upload a screenshot?

Hi guys, thanks for the quick replies ...

thomas-k: I have the setting "Use automatic colour for the start menu" set to "On", so no strange colours are in use.

I'll upload a screen copy next

Basj: I have a large desktop screen so I had the icon size set to huge. I've changed them one step at a time, all the way down to medium and still no icon names. That was in the configuration menus > Advanced Options. I've currently got them set to extra large.

If I right click on the icons directly, that sub menu is set to icon size small. Can I ask why there are two different settings for icon size please?

Thanks

The issue here is there are two settings.

The one you have altered controls the global size of the icons, i.e. the base size of an icon.  This is something the original Windows 10 menu does not have.

The other one which is set to small controls the size the Windows 10 style menu uses itself for that icon.  Small is the smallest unit, Medium is 2x2, etc.  This is the same as in the original Windows 10 menu.  It allows for icons in a group that take more space than others.

You just need to set your icons to medium using the right click menu if you want them to use the medium icon (and have text) and then size down the global setting smaller or things will be very big.

Also, make sure "Hide caption" is not checked.

Here's a screen copy of my start menu. I've only just purchased Start11 so I'm still finding my way around it.

The icon groups are named 1,2,3,4. That was the only way I could spread the icons vertically across the whole start menu

You can see that I've been changing some of the icon images, so it's more obvious what each one does.

Thanks

That's got it thanks . I'll have to play around with the icon groups to fit them horizontally across the screen but that should be fairly straightforward

Thanks for all the replies

I remember now how I ended up with the various icon size settings ...

I found the "Start Menu > Config > Advanced" icon size settings first, which is how they ended up at large, then huge (for my desktop monitor)

Then I found the actual start menu icon right click menus .... which I remember changing from medium to small. I did think it was odd having two different size settings at the time, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it now  :)

Here's a section from my start menu now .... thanks again everyone
