Fences 6.0 Changelog (Released 5/28/2025)

Known issues

While we appreciate all feedback, please remember that we offer no official support for beta \ preview \ developer channel versions of Windows. If you report issues while in any of those early release channels, you should not expect them to be addressed unless it still exists in a retail version of Windows.

Added the ability to drag and drop directly onto the Folder Portal tab headers

Works fine  , but the text still says "->move to desktop"

Also,

The icon rule, "use same spacing inside and outside of Fence groups" is no longer changing based on checking / unchecking

Hi PheonixRising1.  Thank you for posting.

Works fine  , but the text still says "->move to desktop"

To be clear: This isn't unique/new to tab headers.  "Move to Desktop" does appear specifically when dragging from a Folder Portal (to a tab-header, any regular Fence group, or the desktop itself).

The icon rule, "use same spacing inside and outside of Fence groups" is no longer changing based on checking / unchecking

In my testing (on a fresh install in Windows Sandbox. See video link below): Layout tab -> under the Icon spacing header, "Use same spacing inside and outside of Fence groups" will successfully change the icon spacing of any icons in your Fence groups, as intended.  Is this not what you've observed?

We'll have these logged internally to update as reviewed.

Correct. But because the text says "move to desktop" when dragging a file over a folder portal header I almost thought the new feature wasn't working.

Hi,

Works very fine but there is a minor issue. The overall height size of fences, for same size configured, are not the same between fences without tabs and fences with tabs. See picture below (both are configured with a size of 3):

Regards.

OS = Windows 10 LTSC 21H2 (pro pc) but exists on Windows 10 Home 24H2 too (home pc).

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I believe this is known, when you use the "rounded" tab style, try use the "Segmented" tab style. For the Rounded tab style, there some pixel added to the top of the fences.

Hi,

Have been experiencing a strange issue consistently since the final Beta Version of Fences 6 which has persisted into the full release V6.00.

When I hover my mouse over a roll-down Fence that is attached to the top of the screen if I click or double click before the animation has completed my Fences 6 and subsequently Windows Explorer will sometimes freeze/crash, I do also have double click as my Vanish - Quick Hide shortcut so I wonder if this could be related?

At this point everything will be frozen on my screen until I double click anywhere, the screen will then go completely white for a moment and Explorer + Fences 6 will slowly reload.

For me this is a relatively minor issue but can be slightly frustrating so I thought I would report it anyway, I am sorry that I do not have a video of this happening, will upload if I do manage to record it.

Regards,

OS = Windows 10 Version 22H2

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I tested this on my Windows 10 v22H2 OS Build 19045.5854, but I can not reproduce your issue. Please post a video on this so we can understand and try to reproduce it.

Thank you.

No doubt that is Windows Explorer crashing (you can be sure by looking in Windows Event log).

As Basj noted, he could not reproduce it. It might be worth doing a system scan

Title: Win + Space Shortcut Not Working After Installing Fences6

Description:
After installing Fences6 on my system, the Win + Space keyboard shortcut no longer works to switch input methods. Instead, only the Win + Shift + Space combination functions correctly.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Install and run Fences6 on Windows 11 Pro Workstation Edition.

  2. Try to use the Win + Space shortcut to switch between input methods.

  3. The Win + Space shortcut does not work, and no input method change occurs.

  4. The Win + Shift + Space shortcut works fine as a workaround.

Expected Behavior:
The Win + Space shortcut should switch between input methods as expected.

Actual Behavior:
The Win + Space shortcut does not work, and only the Win + Shift + Space combination works for input method switching.

System Information:

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Professional Workstation Edition 24H2

  • Fences6 Version: 6.0

Additional Information:

  • The issue was only resolved after uninstalling Fences6, not just disabling it. The problem persists as long as Fences6 is installed, indicating that the software is the cause of the issue.

There are many alternate keys combos to choose from...

I'm having an issue very similar to Kreuz1994 above.  Periodically doing any sort of actions with the Windows GUI like opening a folder, or launching an app or selecting Fences, Windows will be come unresponsive until another click.  Then explorer.exe will crash, screen goes black for 15 seconds or so, then explorer.exe will reload.  Things will usually work for a few more minutes, then it will happen again.

If I disable Fences, this behavior goes away completely.

I have performed the system scan that was recommended on the response to Kreuz1994, no improvement.

Hi geech, sorry to hear this.

Can we get you to try to capture some logs so we can see if it has any hints?

(1) Turn on advanced logging. You can do this from About → Troubleshooting

(2) Reboot or log off & on

(3) Reproduce issue a couple of times.

(4) Head back to About → Troubleshooting and select Upload Log, being sure to reference this post & your username

Not sure if it'll show anything, but, we'll see.

Also wondering if you were a user of a previous version? If so I'm guessing earlier versions did not do this? Any earlier versions i.e. 5 that did not do this? We don't have a guess as to where this is coming from unfortunately nor can think of changes from 5→6 that would warrant. But- first things first. Thank you.

Sure, will do.

I was a user of v3, and I did a couple of trials of v5 before I bought a license for v6 just a couple weeks ago.  No issues on any of those versions.
