How to go back to Fences 5 from Fences 6 Beta?

Hi,

I own Object Desktop and got the message to try Fences 6 Beta. After installing, my "old" Fences is gone.
How to go back to Fences 5 from Fences 6 Beta if i don't want to upgrade now?

Regards

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. You should uninstall Fences 6, reboot, download Fences 5 from your account product page and install Fences 5. Reboot.

Same here, only my fences are still there. However, I cannot activate it. I have an active ObjectDesktop subscription. I tried logging in to Fences after version 6 installed and I rebooted. Tried via my ObjectDesktop log-in credentials and also tried my lifetime Fences key [I must have purchased that separately a long while ago before I purchased the whole shabang]. Neither worked. Any way to rectify this without uninstalling 6 and then reinstalling 5? I should also point out that I cannot even open Fences to take a snapshot [or anything]. It just goes to the activation screen. I would hate to have to reorganize all my icons again.

I install Fences v6 beta over Fences v5 and use my ObjectDesktop key and the activation work without issue. What error popup when you try to activate using your ObjectDesktop Subs key?

richfed,

Please try this, go to this folder: C:\ProgramData\Stardock (note: ProgramData is a hidden directory, you need to set File Explorer option to unhide hidden directory.

Once you get to that directory. Delete off all Fences directory. For example, from screenshot below, all folder with red need to be deleted.

Once that is done, try to activate again.

Note: Moving forward please report back here for these specific issue: https://forums.stardock.com/535207/fences-6-212-activation-issues

I only had two folders like that - 4 & 5 [I had reformatted my PC about a year ago, so that is why I didn't have any earlier]. No folder for v/6. I deleted the two I had, but it still gives me the same error. The thing is, I was notified by OD's updater that software was updated and ready to install. Simultaneously, it downloaded Fences & Fences 6. I wasn't interested in trying a beta so I chose "Fences," but it installed 6 anyway.

I answered my own question. I uninstalled the beta - rebooted - installed v5 from my account - rebooted -issue persists - uninstalled - rebooted - installed v5 from a previous v5 installation package I had on my PC - rebooted - issue still persists. Fences were saved, thankfully, but I cannot otherwise use the program. Any attempt to open Fences settings results in the activation notice and it fails everytime, both by my Stardock log-in credentials or my Fences key. This is very frustrating. The beta sort of stealthily installed itself. Btw, I am using Windows 11 and ran the installer as Administrator.

Hello,
Today there were updates for Fences and Fences 6 within Object Desktop.

Since I don't want Fences 6, I initiated the update for Fences. And what happens? Fences 6 is installed! That bothers me.
I don't want Fences 6!
Do I now have to expect Fences 6 to be installed every time I update Fences?

And what about the update for Fences?

Please go here and select which Fences you wish to installed. https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products.

Note: Your list might be a little different than what you see here. But, If you start ObjectDesktop subscription since Fences 3 was released. You should get it listed.

Hello Basj,

I know that and I have already done so, but both Fences versions appear in Object Desktop, as the screenshot shows. And when I update “Fences”, i.e. the version I wanted and installed (in my case Fences 5), Fences 6 is installed without being asked and Fences 5 is overwritten.
This should not happen. I don't want that.

I am trying to tell you to use direct download instead of your Object Desktop manager.

Thanks, but I installed Fences 5 with the download from my account to get rid of Fences 6. Again. See the beginning of this thread.
Why is there an update button for “Fences” within the Object Desktop Manager if I'm not supposed to use it? How should I know that?
Will this always be the case for updates in the future?
I'm really confused.

I believe this is known issue since Fences 6 is still in beta stage and it is still using v5.XX as it version number , which, I believe is causing the issue with Fences 5 user with ODM, who, like you, do not wish to upgrade to Fences 6. Hopefully when Fences 6 come out from its beta stage, the issue would resolve itself. It should by then using V6.XX.

I hope, its clarify things for you. Just for now, please don't do any updates for Fences 5. I believe Fences 5 has stop developing since Fences 6 is currently in development.
