A Case for Improved Science using AI

AI Needed Only 48 Hours to do What took Scientists a Decade

Scientists spent 10 years on a superbug mystery - Google's AI solved it in 48 hours

from TechSpot By Shawn Knight February 21, 2025 at 2:22 PM

"Researchers at Imperial College London say an artificial intelligence-based science tool created by Google needed just 48 hours to solve a problem that took them roughly a decade to answer and verify on their own. The tool in question is called "co-scientist" and the problem they presented it with was straightforward enough: why are some superbugs resistant to antibiotics?"

This is only one case, but can you imagine the possibilities?

AI is helping in many fields...medicine, included. From lab results to XRay, MR and other imaging interpretation. Another helper is welcome, but for prostate exams...not so much, thank you. ;)

Ah...it's all good......

....and then along comes Skynet....

Cyberdyne Industries....

...The Umbrella Corp....

Heck....first came HAL9000

  • HAL: [His shutdown] I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.

On the subject of Doom and Gloom.

We, as humans, just need to keep an eye on the world's militaries to make sure AI is kept in check. In this particular case, super-bugs vs. antibiotics is one of the world's greatest challenges for the future of humanity. If AI can solve this problem, it will save countless number of lives, as this problem is only going to get worse over time. And what about the next pandemic?

I totally understand the fear of AI, but with the knowledge of what can - and probably will - go wrong, I believe we can keep it from going too far. The options available to humans without AI, trying to save our planet, and all of humanity, are so limited we are doomed anyway. AI is in it's infancy, and if billions of dollars continue to be invested, it could be our only salvation.

...Dave was, in the end, able to shut HAL down, after all!

Ah. Winston and Julia..."We are dead", and the shock of hearing, "You are dead" coming back from the TV. Ah, and the ersatz chocolate and newspeak, double plus ungood.

The cage over his head with tunnel and the rat... Finally, the bullet in the back of the neck.

Ah, the natural reaction of humans to use humor in order to avoid the seriousness of the actual discussion! ;)

Just an inveterate old thread-napper being reminded of a truly sad, hope crushing and frightening possible future (1984).

The one we have created in its stead is equally frightening  (possibly/hopefully) beneficial, but at least not without hope, should AI be employed to help humanity.

I would not like a robot putting its finger up my backside. Bad enough when the doctor does it.
