Start11 2.51 Release Changelog (Released 01/27/2025)

1/27/2025

Version

  • UI: 2.51

  • Stat11Config.exe: 2.5.1.3

Platforms

  • Stardock and Steam

Changes

  • Limited vertical taskbar to half screen width maximum

  • Resolved issue with turning on secondary screen taskbar when using a vertical taskbar, especially a right aligned one on the secondary.

  • Resolved issues with DisplayFusion when replacing the OS taskbar on the secondary displays on Win11 with enhanced taskbar enabled.

  • Linked to the above, resolved issues with multiple monitors when having no taskbar on the display and using apps which alter the work area

  • Added a registry key S11_UseNewFolderBrowser which when set to "1" will tell Start11 to use newer style Folder picker windows.  This goes in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8 and is type string.

  • Resolved the root cause of the non responsive secondary taskbar rather than the workaround that was in use

  • Added in registry key "S11_OnlyShowReboot" to only show reboot option rather than any other options (business users)

  • Ensured larger start buttons resize correctly when used on a vertical taskbar

  • Resolved a positioning issue for certain custom start buttons when used on a vertical taskbar

  • Tweaks to how work area sizes are calculated to handle slower applications such as ObjectDock (switching from autohide to non autohide sometimes caused the wrong amount of space to be allocated)

  • System tray icons made slightly less spaced on vertical taskbars

  • Resolved issue with run as admin for some other apps

  • Further work area tweaks for mixed dpi setups

  • Fixed black icons in universal apps menu when using Win7 style and apply colour to taskbar/start in the OS

  • Disables more submenu and uninstalling option for web links

  • Fixes run as admin and open file location links for some pinned items

  • Fixes issue with start button positioning when you have no pinned items or running tasks

  • Hide start button on vertical taskbars is not supported

  • Fix for OS search being in search field mode with a top taskbar not working.  It is normal for the search box to disappear when in search in this mode

  • NOTE: Hide start button on vertical taskbars is not supported

  • Hopefully the issue with Explorer windows popping up on Win11 with ExplorerPatcher and potentially could happen on Win10 too.

  • Resolved some issues with work areas with WinStep when using enhanced taskbar and Winstep reserving screen space.

  • Resolved issue with running as admin for some pinned shortcuts in Win10/11/etc menus

  • Resolved issue with non-functional taskbar buttons on the secondary screen when the focus is set to the taskbar or desktop sometimes

  • Fix for workspace calculation when the taskbar is at the top of the screen in some situations

  • Removed excess line in Win10 all apps list at the top.

  • Tweak for apps which setup workspace areas that start at bootup

Hi!

Is there access to download the previous versions of Start11?

Rationale: it should be possible to download and install previous versions, if it is desired by a customer. (Especially if it is a beta-release or if bugs are present).

I was expecting previous versions being available at the download page, but I could not find it.

Thank you and wishing you all a very nice day!

With best regards

I don't pin anything to my taskbar, so I am pleased you were able to find a solution.

    Thank you

What about the spacing on the tray icons ? Can this be done ? If not, do you know whether this is planned ?

Hello, I have reported a mojibake/gibberish text problem of the install wizard under Japanese language setting.

https://forums.stardock.com/533748/page/4/#3957981

Sadly I found the problem is not solved in this beta yet.

I also find the same glich under Chinese language setting.

I believe the result will be the same under other similar language settings like Korean.

Is there a plan for repairing this so I don't have to guess which button is what while setting it up?

Thank you.

There were others report and request from others on this one. Perhaps Support and Dev can do something about this, but, there is nothing official announced yet on it.

The 2.51 beta reduces the gap between icons for vertical taskbars to give you a little more room.

It does not offer multiple columns and I cannot say if or when we will do so as it would take investigation into how possible it is to do this in a reliable manner.  But reducing the spacing does help a bit.

Is there a reason you don't just use the arrow to access the window with your icons as this takes less space and only needs one click more?

Another problem for IME button, the language button is upside down.

As shown in the picture, the white taskbar in vmware has reversed icon, while the black taskbar of my physical machine running some other similar software shows the correct direction.

ALSO the net connection icon is reversed.

And btw is there a way to show the icons in the system tray horizontally? Just like they were in Windows 10 or like in the black taskbar in the pic. It's weird when I have a wide taskbar but there is only one icon in each line.

Windows version is 22631.4751 in VM and 22631.4602 in physical machine.

Reposting the video of icons 'slipping' in secondaty monitor, just a reminder:

Unless I'm crazy, I think the problem that I described for 2.49.1 was fixed with 2.51.1.  (https://forums.stardock.com/532897/get;3954201)
When the Start button would normally disappear for me, all of the pinned icons move down by 1-2px instead.  Hardly a problem, so I'm happy.

I had a different issue with 2.49.4 that was fixed in 2.49.5(https://forums.stardock.com/533419/get;3956950)...  but with 2.51.1 it is partially back.  The original problem was that when the primary taskbar would slide up from autohide, a DisplayFusion taskbar on a 2nd screen would somehow detect a property change in the taskbar where it thought it had to rework the working area of the desktop.  The 2nd taskbar would move upwards every time the 1st taskbar would slide into view.

The new issue with 2.51.1 seems related, but instead of the 2nd DisplayFusion taskbar moving upwards, it reloads in-place and the desktop icons shift up by the size amount of the primary taskbar.  Once the taskbar autohides, the 2nd DisplayFusion taskbar reloads in place again and the icons move down.  --  I can avoid this behavior by configuring the DisplayFusion taskbar to be an exact pixel height instead of "automatic" that reads the original taskbar.  I'm only writing this for general information.  If you can't fix the issue, my workaround is okay.  If someone else has this issue, hopefully they can read this and use the workaround.

- Hi! Thank you for your reply. Will it be possible, at future updates, to go back to previous version?

Same rationale as in my first message.

- If not: why is it decided that it should not be possible to go back to previous version?

Other users have expressed desire to go back to previous version here in the forum.

I myself don´t have any problems after update, but I haven´t checked the new functions. But I also would like to be able to re-install previous working versions if there is an impactfull bug, until the bug has been fixed.

Thank you for a good product.

With best regards

It's unfortunate that previous installers are not available on the Account Downloads page, but a simple solution is to download each installer version as it becomes available and save them somewhere in case you need them. I have done this since I started using Stardock products, and I never use the apps built-in updater. I always use the downloaded installers. This has worked very well for me over the years.

Thanks team.

The OneDrive link (or whatever host it was?) that Neil posted in the previous thread
Start11_2.5.1.0-j191-Setup
fixed the issue I reported.
But it left a gap on the secondary screen near the taskbar (I'm one of those both bars at the top)

But then I noticed the notes about another Beta build, and it looks like I timed it just right

this latest patch - fixed even that

as of
Start11_2.5.1.2-j199-Setup_sd

things are working for me, as expected.

Thank you again.

  • Added a registry key S11_UseNewFolderBrowser which when set to "1" will tell Start11 to use newer style Folder picker windows.  This goes in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8 and is type string.

This is a really great addition to Start11! Thanks

Posted this on the now closed 2.5 thread.  Downloaded, installed, rebooted to the 2.5.1.2 beta - same issue:

My setup is:
3 monitors, pyramid style.  Primary on top.
Enhanced taskbar displayed only on primary, and configured to display at the top.
Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100.2894

Issue - when I right click a running app in the taskbar, no menu appears.  If I just hover, I get the proper preview thumbnail - but right click, nothing.

Having seen this before, I reconfigured Start 11 to display the taskbar at the bottom.  Hover and right click both work as intended.  Reconfigure to display taskbar at the top, hover works, right click does not.  My guess, the right click is displaying 'upwards' into never never land.

One issue with the vertical (betta) taskbar. 5 different computers running windows 11 have the same issue. When you click on the "magnifying glass" icon for search you a box open with a flashing bar at the top. When you reset the vertical taskbar to the horizontal default setting and click on search the search window opens up perfectly.

What build of Windows 11?

Do you have anything else running which might impact the taskbar or desktop on the machines?

There is an issue with Start11 when used with the Standalone "True Launch toolbar". Because each toolbar has to be set as a taskbar style toolbar, it reserves the space used by the toolbar from ordinary windows using it. This means that programs, folders etc no longer fill the whole desktop, even if the toolbar is set to hide automatically. This only happens with the latest version of Start11 and rolling back to v2.11 allows the toolbar to function normally.

It would be great to allow the True Launch Toolbar to work again without reserving valuable screen space, though it might be even better if there was toolbar integration in Start11. Alternatively if ObjectDock could be enhanced to include popup menus and folders that have the same flexibility as the True Launch Toolbar.

Are you using 2.51 beta as that should have addressed that issue.  If you had 2.5 before it might be worth uninstalling, rebooting and then installing 2.51.

Yep, using the latest Beta. V2.51

Reinstall V2.11 which works fine, then yesterday installed V2.51 and now the issue has returned.

If you really think that removing all version of start11 and then installing the beta again will work, then i will do it.
