Unable to run CursorFX on Windows 11 even after everything

I purged, I uninstalled, I reinstalled, and nothing

Hi,

I have resubscribed to Stardock Object Desktop's for another year. I have had CursorFX working up until yesterday.  Today, I click to run it, but nothing appears.  I tried running it as an administrator, but still does the icon twirl animation on my old cursor but the CursorFX app doesn't run or appear on my screen.  I have purged it, uninstalled it and reinstalled it, I even redownloaded it from Stardock site, all to no avail.

I checked to even see if it is running my Task Manager, but it is not even running on my computer, despite running it from Object Desktop.  I can add Wincustomized cursor themes no problem, but that is all I can do. I can add stuff, but cannot use them.  What happened? Yesterday was all good and now nothing I can do about it.

Please help, it is one of the few things about Stardock products I like most: CursorFX.  I am on Windows 11 and will enclose my computer details for your reference if you want.

Thank you,

Concerned client.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Yes need more details on your system.

  1. Windows 11 full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe
  2. CursorFX version installed.
  3. What changed before the issue starting to happen. Windows update? Any other 3rd party software update? Drive update? Some Windows setting was changed?

Thank you.

Hi,

In response to you questions, please see the following:

1) Windows 11 full version and OS Build number: Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4037)

2) I cannot determine the version number, but this is the .exe file I used to install it, "CursorFX4-fs-setup_sd"  So I am guessing maybe Cursor FX4?

3) Yes, today I updated Windows to the following: 2024-08 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 23H2 for x64 (KB5042099) & 2024-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5041585).

Also, I add new CursorFX icons from Wincustomize, but after adding "Crystallion.CursorFX" it crashed, closed by itself and then refused to open up again.

I did nothing else or changed anything else before that other than the updates and adding more Cursors.  Hope that helps.

The installation file for CursorFX 4 is "CursorFX_4.03_Setup_sd."

I downloaded "Crystallion'" and it runs as expected, so I don't think the problem is with the cursor.

Try uninstalling CursorFX, reboot, download the latest installer from https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products and install; reboot, and test.

Let us know what happens.

I too tried Crystallion but don't see any issue. It might be something went wrong while downloading it. Please try this guide: https://forums.stardock.com/485856/cursorfx-support-faq#CFXcrashing. Try that and report back.

Hi,

I did as asked and went to: \Users\ADMIN\AppData\Local\Stardock\CursorFX, but all I found was one file called, "SasLog.txt", the contents were:

Nothing else, I even deleted the Crystallion.CursorFx, but still no avail.  Should I delete this file instead? Should I delete all other CursorFX themes, and start from the beginning. I am getting more and more lost and confused.

Help!!

Look like you has returned to Windows Default cursor. That is why there is no CurrentTheme.CursorFX in that Folder. Can you open up CursorFX Configuration window and select any cursor that come with CursorFX?

Hi,

I am unable to open CursorFX configuration window, cause all it does load up, but nothing appears on my screen.  Kind of like CursorFX issue; is there a way to force to appear?

Thanks

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Nope nada zilch babcus.  *Sigh*, I guess I have to accept the fate that I may never use CursorFX again with my stardock subscription.

Oh well, you guys had awesome cursors from Wincustomize...shame that I have to look to other third party subscribers to get that now, :(.

Thanks for trying tho.

We are not finished yet, if you still interested to try resolving your issue, please test on Windows Sandbox: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#sandbox. The link is for Fences, but I do believe its the same steps for CursorFX. If it work under Windows Sandbox, that is showing something is blocking CursorFX from working properly.

Hi,

Ok I am game, I will keep you posted.

I did what you asked and it worked well in Windows Sandbox, and when I tested the new cursors I was downloaded they all worked up until I tried to add Tachyon.CursorFX (from Wincustomize site) then it crashed in the Windows Sandbox and won't run.  Whatever is in Tachyon.CursorFX is blocking CursorFX software from running again.

I closed Windows Sandbox and re-opened it again, and just tested just adding only Tachyon.CursorFX, it immediately crashed and won't reload again.  The problem is not my computer or CursorFX, but whatever is in Tachyon.CursorFX then, because it also doesn't work at all in Windows Sandbox version.

Hope that helps.

This cursor runs on my system, although it does seem very jittery, but I think that is by design.

Make sure you have closed CursorFX by right clicking in the system tray and then click "Close CursorFX."

Then go to

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock\CursorFX\Themes

and delete that theme,

and then go to

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Stardock\CursorFX

and delete the Current Theme.

Test that CursorFX is now running without issue and report back.

FINALLY!! You are a genius! Yes it worked once I removed Tachyon.CursorFX it worked like a charm.  Maybe my system hates jittery.  I didn't find anything in Users\ADMIN\AppData\Local\Stardock\CursorFX, but the one I found in: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock\CursorFX\Themes, was the cause of it.

Never touching jittery again lol!  But...I am scared...how do I know which ones are safe and which ones aren't? Any advice?

99% of the cursors on WinCustomize are safe, but now you know how to delete them if you get into trouble.

I'm disappointed to hear that Tachyon caused trouble on somebody's system. That is surprising to me. On my system, Tachyon appears to run smoothly. I don't find it to be jittery at all. But if someone finds it to be problematic, then they should by all means, stop using it. I'm kind of puzzled by this. Fortunately, there are other outstanding cursors in the CursorFX gallery. One is sure to be find an alternative that they like and that will work great for them.
