Right click of taskbar icons no longer works after 07-2024 Windows 11 update.

Right click of taskbar icons no longer works after 07-2024 Windows 11 update.

After the July update from Microsoft (KB5040527) a right click on any icon on the taskbar does nothing, no options presented at all. If I disable Start11 (v 2.08) and reboot to plain Win 11, the right click option works as expected.

This also occurred on a second PC.

I did find some info that may explain what is going on here

https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/07/26/windows-11-kb5040527-out-with-start-taskbar-features-direct-download-msu/

This specifically;

Windows 11 KB5040527 is now available as an optional update with Build 22631.3958

That’s what I’ve been saying.

Looks like I installed the update. I usually just update without putting much thought into it.

You can check to see if you have it via settings > Windows update > update history

I checked and it look like I already have this updates. Refer screenshot below.

Just because you have the update doesn't mean the new taskbar features are turned on. Remember, they ae being rolled out over time.

If you don't have the option below, the new features are not turned on.

If

I do not have that feature listed. Why then does my taskbar not work?

Is there an article by any chance on the roll out?

@pelaird

From what I understand if there are new features, the updated package number should be the same so if I already have installed KB5040547, all features should be available, no? Unless there is another previous package that you have that I do not have installed.

Any idea how to force it turn on? What I notice there are two differences between your setup and mine on Start11/ Windows taskbar option.

  1. In Windows taskbar "Show hover cards for inactive and pinned taskbar apps. This not available for me.
  2. In Start11 about page "Windows Insider detected", this also not available for me.

Perhaps we should wait for input from Stardock Support or Dev for this one.

Same, I do not have those either and yet I do have the same issue Pelaird has. My system matches yours which makes this more a head scratcher for me.

Than, something else might be the issue here. Not Windows version and not Start11 version. Maybe other 3rd party application installed or mod/registry change previously done?

No 3rd party software on my system. Stardock all the way! I think you were right to suggest we wait for the support team to investigate.

Hello everyone,

I can confirm in my testing of the issue that right-clicking taskbar icons isn't bringing out the context menu as it normally would under some specific conditions.

To reiterate what seems consistent with what we've each uncovered here, this issue has been reproduced only if:

  • In Start 11v2 (found in latest build of 2.0.8.1): the Taskbar position is set to Align Top (other settings can be all default).
  • A Windows 11 Insider build is updated with KB5040543 (In my test I have confirmed this does not occur before getting this update specifically).

I now have these findings logged internally, please let me know if there's anything else relevant that I've missed.

Internal Ref: ODNT-8501

Thanks for finding this and posting the helpful feedback.

A Windows 11 Insider build is updated with KB5040543

I do not have this build on my system

I am running build 22631.3958 with an update preview of KB5040527 (nothing on an insider preview channel)

However, what ever fixes the log may fix my issue as well.

This remains an outstanding question, then, why you are getting this issue.  I can verify on an identical build to yours, with the KB5040527 update you've mentioned, that the issue doesn't reproduce for me.  Notice I've right clicked the icon on the top aligned taskbar:

If you're able to find out how to prevent this issue from reproducing on your end, PheonixRising1, I expect that will be quite useful information.

You might start with using the "Settings backup" setting to backup and try again under conditions as close to the defaults with Start11v2, as I did (the only thing I changed was Align Top in the above image).

Thanks much,

I'm on an insider build and I see this issue. I'd be interested to know from the person not on an insider build if switching auto-hide on for the taskbar allows a menu to show but it's in the wrong place and only shows part of the first line? I am fairly certain the issue is with placement and size of the menu. The right-click action itself is working. You can tell this because the focused window goes out of focus; the hover action on the taskbar icons no longer shows the preview thumbnails of open windows; and you can use the keyboard arrow keys and enter key to perform the actions that you would expect being in the menu (like Up + Enter to close or just Enter to open new).

I just tested MICAHBUCY1's statement on my system and agree/confirm that the issue is that the drop-down menu isn't displaying. When I right click an icon, say Excel, then arrow down and hit enter, the document I have pinned to that spot will open.

This should be resolved in our next update.  Thanks for letting us know.

This was resolved in Start11v2 ver. 2.1.0.0

  • Resolved issue with right-click menus when the taskbar is at the top of the screen - requires enhanced taskbar enabled

The current version for Start11v2 is 2.1.1.0 available on your account Downloads page https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

Sorry about that.

What version of Windows are you running xxxxx.xxxx?

Are you using EP or SAB?

Maybe an uninstall and reinstall using a new installer downloaded from your Account Downloads.

As a last resort you could try the Purge and reinstall following the directions here.
