Just kidding... but I still thought some of you might be interested in a bit of news about my latest skin.

I promised I'd release something new this year as a result of Gary Jules getting the Christmas No. 1 and winning me £400 to buy myself a sparkly new home cinema system. Well, I've now settled on a likely candidate for my next release, and things are progressing slowly but surely.

I won't tell you what it's called or give you any more details than the image below and to say it's a skin to accompany a rather popular recent release in another area of desktop customization by a surprising new(ish) talent.

Well things are progressing slowly but surely on this skin. I've made small changes to the majority of the elements, and I think things are looking a lot more striking as a result, while remaining true to the source material. I'm still not telling you what that source material is though...

Now the next question is how far do I go with this? Who would like to see an all-singing all-dancing skin of the metalX2 variety? Who would like a nice simple, fast skin this time around?

Personally, I'd go for the fast and nimble skin-type this time around. The other MetalX skins certainly had one heck of a feature set, but it did get a little big.

Time to pull out those GANT icons...

Do you have an expected release date? Looks interesting, but I liked the 'Old' version better. Less metal, but slightly better visibility factor. Not too many shiny bevels, please. It hurts the eyes.

As usual concerning an expected release date, when it's done.

Although I'm all for simple skins, I'm also developing this with a mind to possibly making it an entry to the 2004 GUIOs. So while there will be a simple version as usual, I might still include all of the extras if time permits. If I do so this time though, I intend to make things a little simpler to configure.

While I agree that perhaps the first attempt was a fraction easier on the eyes, it also didn't have quite the same look as the inspiration. With these modifications I've attempted to match the look of the original a lot closer. I honestly didn't have metal in mind as I tweaked things, but I'll concede that perhaps it does look a little metallic. In a way that's where I should be going for this skin anyway...

I'm also investigating doing a proper custom colour version this time around too, at the request of the original artist. The standard hue shifting functions of WB would cause a problem when trying to maintain that blue uplight.

Nearly had a heart attack when you mentioned this may be going into the GUIO '04 That two months away! Curse my impatientness!

Custom colours are hard to get right. No idea if this would work, but you could just make masks for the areas that you don't want changing (like the close button) and let the force custom colour option handle the rest? Yet to try that method myself so it may not work.

What ever happened to your 8-Ball skin GUIO '04 seems like a perfect excuse...

I think it's pretty much dead now. My abilities have moved on a ways since I started work on that skin, and so many similar ones have come along in the meantime.

Perhaps if there's sufficient demand I might be coaxed back into working on it, but for the time being I think I'll be looking elsewhere for entries to the GUIOs.

I am very close with the game of billiards in all forms. An 8-ball skin would be something I would cherish for days. I would really love to see a pool-related skin...especially one done by you, GH. What more could a pool fan ask for?

Wouldn't want to coerce you in to making it but I can see 9-ball skin being made from that...and an 2 ball, 3 ball etc .

However, getting back to the skin at hand, the little teaser shot look great, if the rest of the skin look as good then you just may be on to another winner

(plus I'm a sucker for blue skins)
