Game won't Launch

Hello,

Today I bought this game and I installed it and when I clicked play, the launcher started. When I click play on the launcher I see a popup briefly and then the game crashes.

Things I have tried:

- verified the games folders through Steam.
- restart the pc
- installed latest drivers (nvidia)
- reinstalled microsoft visual C
- moved game to a different folder through Steam.
- Run the game as administrator

I am currently trying to reinstall the game all together. I submitted my crash report under the e-mail: [email protected] several times.

Can you guys help me please?

I tried also to force the game in windowed mode by editing the settings file (Fullscreen = 1 to Fullscreen = 0) and force it into 1920 x 1080 but no luck sadly :(

Hmm, very strange. Today I wanted to play GalCiv 3 and that one always worked before but now it crashes too in the same way as GalCiv 4 does. Could it be the launcher that is causing this problem?

I tried to make an other account on my windows computer and the game will launch :). I don't understand why both those games refuse to launch in my normal account. Tried the switch on "Controlled folder access" but it doesn't seem to work. I can play for now but do you guys have an other solution to this problem?

here is someone in the GalCiv 3 forum with the exact same issue as mine.

Hi there,

Our team is still investigating this issue and one of our engineers was wondering if you could plz let us know what permission settings are different between the two windows accounts? (since you said that making a new windows account fixed the issue)

When I want to play I login on my new windowsaccount and I can start the game from there.

I never heard a reply to my latest message here on the forums so I dont know where to look for the difference in permissions between the accounts.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Tried the switch on "Controlled folder access"

You don't want Controlled Folder Access 'on' for a test, you want it OFF.

Indeed, both of you could run the game by doing the same thing - creating a new Windows Administrator account.

Hello everyone, little update on the issue. Reinstalling steam unfortunately did nothing. However after creating a new Admin account everything works as intended.

As you might expect, there are fewer stars in the universe than there are possibilities for what could have changed under your normal Windows account.  The new Windows Admin account illustrates that the game runs on your PC when out from under this unknown restriction.  In other words, it not the game itself, its something prohibiting it from doing what it needs to do to function.  When this is the case, it's likely something stopping the game from reading or writing.

One thing I did note from your debug....

Debug Message:  Personal folder located at C:\Users\jjpke\OneDrive\Documenten

Under the new Windows Admin account, is \My Documents OneDrive connected (like it appears to be for your main account) or no, you have not connected to OneDrive under it, thus, \My Documents would be under a local (non-OneDrive linked) user account, Example:

C:\Users\WhateverYourNewWindowsAccountNameIs\Documenten

The reason this jumps out at me is file locking issues if OneDrive is doing a sync or seems to be in a perpetual state of doing so (see again, the game cannot read or write something).  It would be telling if this is something that is 'new', meaning, when GC3 was working for you, you had not linked your OneDrive account, now that you have, it does not.

Another test to see if it can write, rename any GC folder in:

\Documents\My Games

to something like GC3.OLD

Run the game.

If the original GC3 folder is not recreated, the game can't write.

Lastly, under your main account, you can try to eliminate as many variables as possible with a cleanboot

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd

This will reduce the running services to only that which Windows needs to run properly (meaning, when you run Steam, it will likely prompt you that its restarting its own service)

There are 3 things to look at:

  • WCFA is OFF
  • Possible write issues with OneDrive
  • A cleanboot under your main Windows Admin account
