-=-oh great, another newbie-=-

hey people, i am new to this "community" as you call it and i would like to start doing stuff, like logons, bootscreens and maybe even wallpapers. i was just wondering, could i put up pictures that i took on my vacations as walls? thanks for input and tips are valued.

Photography is sometimes accepted here...sometimes its not...Depends on the picture really...Does it make a good desktop, and how is the quality are some questions the mods will ask.

Wallpapers are about the only thing with strict moderation, and I don't think there is any soecific type of wall that is allowed. There are preferences and photos are low on the food chain because almost anybody can take a decent photograph. Submit them to see if the wall be accepted. There is no harm done in getting things rejected, maybe one might make it. I consider myself still new here too, and I found that bootscreens are about the easiest things to make especially now that it has the preview option...no more having to restart to see if you got the progress bar lined up right.

sweet thank CT and EH for your help. i think that i will do bootscreens, but i heard that they are only allowed to be 16 colors, is that true? thats gonna make it more difficult to produce quality ones...

yes they can only be 16 colors. The image quality at 16 colors is what seperates the good bootskins from the bad ones right now, at least in my opinion. It just takes a little playing around to get your pictures to look good. One trick is to make the picture monotone, another is to make the picture have less detail.

yes, i was just thinking to ask if 16 shades of gray are acceptable, sweet, at least that sheds some light now only problem is that i have a 56 k modem that only runs at 26k so i have to go to the library to upload and stuff or..... maybe i can get a cable modem? nah, my pa wouldnt let and my mom thinks the thing is evil

and it will take like an hour to upload a 5 megapixel wallpaper since theyre at 2560X1940 which is about 2 megs each.....

You might want to consider resizing your wallpapers to 1024 and 1600. Bootskins can handle 16bits for now, I believe.

yes, i was just thinking to ask if 16 shades of gray are acceptable
........... 16 colors is the maximum that can be used, but you're not required to use all 16.

A good logon or bootskin should be made with the same effort and skill as a good wall too. No 'five minute' filter, Bryce or cut and paste jobbies.
