Edge installed applications show blank icon on taskbar

Sorry to hear you are having issues. I have some of these web apps on my taskbar, but they do not get blank for me. Need to know more details on your issue.

1. Windows full version number. Use Winver.exe
2. Start11 v2 full version number.
3. Taskbar size, taskbar location top or bottom, taskbar auto hide or not etc.
4. Post a video of the issue would help us understand your issue better.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm using Windows 11 22H2. Start11v2 v2.03 but as I say the problem has existed ever since the original Start11. I'm also running Groupy. Task bar is medium, bottom, no autohide (in fact, I've changed very little of Start11's settings from default!)

Actually we need your full Windows version number. Something like this: Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.3693)<- Please use Windows own Winver.exe to get that number.

I had posted about this two weeks ago was hoping to see a fix in these new versions but nothing. It's not just edge it's chrome installed apps too. This is not a one off case. This actually has been happening for me ever since enhanced taskbar was implemented.   I just didn't use enhanced taskbar. But with v2 I would like to use it because it has more features.

Definitely - can other people confirm what happens for them with pinned Edge/Chrome apps when Enhanced taskbar is on? Happened for me since  Windows 10 with orig Start 11 - let alone current Win 11 with start11v2.

Just to make sure we are on the same version. I am on Edge Version 119.0.2151.72 and Windows 11 v 23H2 (OS Build 22631.2715).

Do know that when I tested on my system The app icon did change to black square for a short moment and it change back to its original icon after that. I tested on Youtube and another local shoping page. Please share a page that you see an issue so I can verify it on my system.

Added note: I am also on Start11 Enhanced taskbar.

It's not just Edge in chrome it just displays a generic chrome icon. It's not displaying the installed Web app icon for any. Although youtube tv displays the edge blank square behaviour in chrome. It's truly all over the board. The only one I have seen work as you described is Peacock it loads very slow but finally loads the icon in edge. This is not ideal and is not working in my opinion.

Please see my post from two weeks ago for a screenshots. As someone who uses a lot of these installed apps with these browsers.  This makes this enhanced taskbar completely unusable you can't at a glance what apps are running.

Again enhanced taskbar has always exhibited this behavior for me since the inception of the feature.  start11 v1 and v2 both did this for me. 

I make a short video to show you how it look on my system. Do tell me if you are using different setting and post a video so we can understand the issue better and try to reproduce the issue.

What would be helpful basj is if for the pages you open you clicked wihin the windows. On mine the icon usually appears when you open the web app, but disappears as soon as you start interacting with it. I am getting the issue consistently with web.snapchat.com. I'm getting it intermittently with getpocket.com - sometimes the app appears, sometimes it doesn't, it ALWAYS disappears when i click to read an article. I was wondering if this was something to do with the underlying URL string changing when we click on stuff and that somehow causing icon issues.

I've made an vid showing Pocket where the icon never appears and Snapchat where it appears on load and then disppears when I click into a conversation - please excuse the blurry bit where I'm censoring my conversation list. At that point I'm just clicking on a conversation to open it.

But if I un-pin it from taskbar and launch those app via start panel, as you did, I do get the blank icons on taskbar as shown in my screenshot below.

Great spot. I had missed the context that you were using taskbar pinning! I can confirm that when I pin all the sites to taskbar, the icons behave themselves just fine - it's launching from Start menu alone that's causing the problem.

And for what it's worth, I'm certain the problem also affected Start10 in a similar way.

Stated in my original post. Unpin to recreate all these issue. 

This video shows the chaos that is edge apps and enhanced taskbar. Also shows Chrome apps displaying just the generic chrome icon.

It is somewhat unlikely this impacted Start10 or Windows 10 in any way as it would need the enhanced taskbar to be in use which is a Start11 Win11 exclusive thing.

Does this problem continue if you set Start11 to not combine taskbar buttons and ensure it is set to show captions?

The issue still persists for me regardless of taskbar display setting. Slow loading every time you open and close the app of icon. Sometimes the icon just never appears. Other times when clicking through the windows the app will just stop displaying the icon.

This does appear to solve the problem for me - the icon remains on both Pocket and Snapchat as I browse about.

It is strange the issue continues for you when it was resolved for others but your issue also seems different as it seems to impact all modes but the issue didn't for others.  This is pointing to a different cause.

Also did you uninstall, reboot and then install the newer beta just to be sure all files were replaced?

I just did what you suggested. The edge icons are still loading very slowly on average three to 10 seconds. Then they sometimes just randomly disappear and don't come back. Interestingly enough it's not just edge and chrome maps that are disappearing it is also windows metro apps.  I haven't seen the blank blue icons though. 

Are those metro apps showing an icon initially and then losing them later?

Are they pinned or unpinned?

It's a metro app that's pined. It's show initially and then disappear around the same time I'm using the edge apps that are disappearing/loading slow. I don't think they're connected though because I have had this pinned metro app (mytube for windows store) disappear randomly since enhanced taskbar the introduced in v1.

On Start11 v2.05 now and it appears to have significantly improved. I'm now seeing the icon consistently on Pocket, Microsoft Loop and Snapchat, without having to pin the icon to the taskbar - fabulous!

I am noticing that any time I click on these web apps to do something: e.g. open an article in Pocket, or a chat thread in Snapchat, the icon on the taskbar briefly flickers - it looks to me like a refresh is happening in line as it goes to a different URL or something? If that's what's happening, ideally the icon would only need to be refreshed if it was actually changing, but don't get me wrong: this is still a massive improvement on the blank space!

Can anyone else confirm that this is working for them on 2.05?
