Is it possible to give them the ability to seek out the closest asteroids to mine?

They can do that now. It should be on the top left of list of commands. The hotkey is 'k'.

I don't appear to have that. Mine has explore w/hotkey 'x'

Did you start a new game dwander85?  I checked in my game and there was definitely an auto mine option above that explore one.  If you did start a new game you found some sort of bug because the feature is there.

Starting a new game after a patch is a good idea. The GC4 save files saves things like unit stats and other stuff. In general, I don't start long games if I know there is a patch around the corner.
