Turn off Cannon?

I wish there was an option to turn off cannons, as there was in Sins.  It is SO irritating to instantly lose the game when a cannon hits your homeworld.

We'll consider adding it but we wanted to see if we'd solved all the frustrating issues of the sins1 novalith with a redesign.

What was the situation when this occurred? It should be very difficult given the range restrictions. If they got a cannon within firing range of your home planet the writing was probably on the wall as they'd have to have a entrenched position deep into your territory (or a high level titan even closer). Although I wouldn't rule out a bug or balance issue either.

When my homeworld was destroyed by a novalith and I lost the game, I had turned the corner and was starting to win.  I'm not sure of the range, but a slew of worlds was getting closer to me.  I was starting to tackle them, but the cannon well could have moved into range.

Kinda seems like a balance thing, maybe? If you're playing with Capital victory on, and you're winning but the enemy has a cluster of 2-3 planets moving towards your capital they can snipe it. You can counter snipe it as well but then you'd just win by being a tiny bit quicker. The way to defend it however is just to use a planetary shield from a starbase, which should be doable in most scenarios when this situation would occur.

The Ragnarov might be a bit of a problem there now as well, but with the phase inhibitor that should be fixed.

Maybe when a canon is built announce it being planned then built and show it on the map?

(if you have spy tech that maps super weapons when deployed).

...and since I couldn't yet research orbital shields, when the Novalith killed me and my homeworld, I would still request the ability to turn off cannons, as I prefer the capital planet defeat option.

A notification is a possibility but they aren't meant to be 'super' weapons anymore. They are meant to be a rough thematic counterpart to the Loyalist ability to have 2 starbases in a gravity well. Should we notify when a loyalist player builds 2 starbases?

Maybe we have some numbers to tweak to bring it back in line.

I'm also thinking about a planetary shield of sorts that is available earlier in the tech tree. It wouldn't be as good as the starbase one. It may also have other applications.

Lots of experimenting to do, so the feedback is very useful, thanks!
