Editorial.....

Posted on Skinbase....but reposted here to provide food for thought for those who may not go there all that often...

hobnobber...yes, basically all that is correct, though a more accurate estimate of those who contribute via skins, purchases, community input/interaction vs. those who only 'leech' for freebies is very much more than the ratio of 25 to 1....perhaps more in the realm of 2500 to 1....and that's the rub.
When skinning was in its infancy, say 5 years ago, it was all new and thrilling to everyone....now it has grown, not so much with newer apps coming on the scene on a daily basis...that was the 'norm' back in skinz.org [mk.1] days, but now the growth is in general interest/popularity, thanks to Microsoft's added awareness of the concept, with its visual styles, etc.
What you get now is many more 'users' but not a heck of a lot new blood in skinning as skinners as such....certainly not a comparable ratio to the popularity growth.
When once the skinners and their 'community' sites could foot the bill for all, as the majority were like-minded skinners themselves, now it's more a case of 'us and them'...the providers of product vs. the users of the product.
The dynamics have changed.  With this change comes commercial pressures on everyone involved.
New specifics require new handling.....people need to cater for the changes with methodology that makes the situation survivable or else viability suffers and the reality of the system falls apart.

Change can be horrid and unpalatable but may just be absolutely necessary and unavoidable.

Anyone involved in the game for long enough can see the writing on the wall....even since the dot-com failings of the likes of eFront that killed the first REAL skinning community we have been striving for sustainability.
Anyone with genuine heart-felt feelings for the skinning community as a whole will realise the necessity to not put heads in the sand and blindly hope life will magically go on as normal, but make a conscious effort to find a sustainable model.
Sure, many will arrive at alternate theories of a working model, but until tried no-one will be sure what actually will succeed or not.
All that can be done is to try our collective best, hence many soul-searching threads on the subject of 'the future of skinning' in one form or another on many/most sites.

Poor old Devart has a massive user-base and being a graphics site demands high bandwidth/server load as does any skinning site at their relative levels.

I remember what the world was like before skinning....[my first foray was with Dos GUI shells - pre Windows...then Win 3x and beyond] and would hate to see the whole skinning world fall apart due to ennui or apathy, hence the hands-on involvement.

Let's all look forward to skinning/GUI modification still being not just 'fun', but sustainable in another 5 years, or 50...

I almost feel sorry for him. It's funny that no one attacks KarmaGirl like this.

UzEE did. Look what happened (and keeps happening) to him.

Pinthar: I feel vistor status for you coming your way dude....not wise to pick on a admin (Ishould know)

not wise to pick on a admin

Actually, why go out of the way to treat anyone like that regardless their position? There is enough anger and ugliness in the world. Why create more? Especially why turn your own persona into something that vile?

I kinda like the handle of 'Dude'....makes me all warm and fuzzy...

Heaven knows how my 'editorial' about skinning and its future got quite so turned around, but I'll put it down to the newness of a member not quite up to speed with the history of skinning and its global community...

Just to help a wee bit, particularly with inferences about English, comprehension and the skinning community.....skinning is one heck of a lot more 'global' than just English speakers.....

Even Australians do it...

Not to mention the most popular Alternate shell....LiteSTEP was created by LoneRunnr...[he's French]....then there's the most prominent/important skinners on the planet....MOST are not from the US, not when you mention the likes of treetog, Alexandrie and Adni18 to name but three....[plenty more of them, too]...

But do I really have to provide Skinning 101 for every person who trips over and stumbles upon our world?  I hope not.

I'll assume as usual that some people just lose the plot a little and rely on  'patience-mode' to help us all through the odd hiccup...

The last I checked, this was an international community, so to say that non-English speaking "skinners" wont have a voice here and will be "excused" the same as saying that you are better than everone else

Actually, damn it....I won't leave that unanswered.

By 'excused' I mean they [the non English speakers] would have an excuse for not understanding the written English word.

You, Pinthar, however have no such excuse, nor do you have one for mis-interpreting the statement other than for the nuisance value thereof.

Non-English speaking skinners DO have a voice here, and always will, though the same may not necessarily be said for certain commenters in this thread....

megalomania, now thats ripe!

goofmorphing, I yeild to your disposition, however megalomania isn't consistant in your reference of my character with that which is truth. The truth of the matter is I didn't think it to be such a breach of forum etiquette to start a new December desktop post. Furthermore, Travis, the way the whole matter was handled by jaF0 warrented my indignation.

Again, this realy is pointless, and if everyone wants to gang up on me, then that is fine. suit yourselves. I can go round and around with this horse..."Dudes!"

BTW: Goofmorphing, as a consideration I wont even entertain your other attempts at insulting me. G'day m8.

Had post #11 or any previous comment elsewhere by Mr. P been "Oops, sorry", none of this would have happened, I bet.

"The truth of the matter is I didn't think..."

Aye, and then instead of bowing to and adopting the site's etiquette, you just set yourselves at odds with it and called an administrator a terrorist. You are well on your way to 'beloved' status, believe me.

/me pokes his head with curiosity as to why this post suddenly jump to the top, looks around, then remembers he left his helmet and flak jacket at home and decides to sneak out quietly before there is collatoral damage.

...Had I not been slammed from the start, I might have been willing to negotiate an appology - one for one, and be disposed to comply. However under the circumstances, any recoil on my part is beyond my good nature.

This whole thread is becoming obtuse...Can't we all just move on...really?

Jafo starts this thread with an intelligent and thoughtful post, mostly aimed at people who have been around skinning for several years. i have been around long enough to appreciate the post, and the point.

Pinthar it is true that to start with everyone has a voice. however, this is a private site so the owners are under no obligation to grant anyone a voice if they don't want to. so please remember that having a voice here is a privilege, NOT a right.

beyond this, people are judged by their actions. so, some people's voices carry more weight and respect due to their actions. wandering in and picking an apparently pointless argument with Jafo, or any other site admin (read years of contribution to this community) is hardly a way to earn yourself respect or regard for your opinions.

it seems you are behaving like a twit, and are being treated with the corresponding level of respect. perhaps stepping back and learning a bit about this place before commenting would be wise.

perhaps if you could put your points in a clear and intelligent manor, sighting examples where possible, it would help. in my experience, this site has nothing against intelligent discussion. for these to work it does help if people can refrain from making wild and unsubstantiated statements.

Pinthar: I thought it started becoming obtuse around post #11, when you could have said "oops, sorry" instead of... well... becoming obtuse. Not sure why you are trying to "direct the flow", since it isn't your string anyway.
