Next Start or Object Bar? Which would you choose?

Is niether a valid response? I would rather use my LiteStep.

Codered...You can, I believe, use both simultaneously. Nextstart might require a bit more 'low-level' tinkering. Both are excellent! Give them a try and see for yourself.

If I had to choose one or the other, I'd choose NextStart. I like it's menuing capabilities more than ObjectBar's.

Alternatively, if you buy an Object Desktop, you get a whole bunch of appliations, one of which is ObjectBar

Both NextStart and ObjectBar require some learning to get the most out of them


I suggest you download both and try each of them for awhile before deciding which to purchase

I do not use either on a regular basis, I own both, but prefer Nextstart. Object Bar is mainly for taskbars, launch bars, etc, and is much more configurable for that, and Nextstart is Mainly (but not completely) for menuing, and kicks ass. Very nice program.

Nextstart

There is nothing ObjectBar can do that DesktopX can't, so I've never seen the use for ObjectBar. (For the uses I would have for it, of course. I know it is a powerful application.) As far as Nextstart, I used to be a die hard user, but then I grew up, so to speak, to DesktopX again. I can do far more with DesktopX than with Nextstart. I used to run them both, but why have two programs that overlap abilities running on the same computer?

the main feature of both NextStart and ObjectBar are menus. this is what DesktopX can´t do.

CoderedPL: try both, that´s why there are trial versions. also have a look at HoverDesk http://www.hoverdesk.net as it has similar functionality and see what you like best.

I have not used NextStart Since Objectbar Came out, but I have to say it is kind of hard to skin, However so is NextStart. If you can get object Desktop, both DesktopX and ObjectBar are included, which is a great deal and they work realy well together.  Also, if you have Object Desktop you will end up getting Object Bar 2 as well which is going to be Very cool.

Hoverdesk is a solid third option to look into for sure...

Is Hoverdesk still being developed? It's been almost a year since the last update.(v2.5 and 3.0beta)

Yes it is, though time and such might be a factor in the development. I can say this, responce time is excellent and they stand behind the product. Besides the fact that there is a solid user base which is constantly creating new skins and such for it...

I prefer objectbar because with nextstart, the only thing you can do is skinning and that's all ( I exaggerate a little I know but it is not far from the true )whereas with objectbar you can do what you want about menu/taskbar/.., as desktopX can do but more easely.

To be honest, I know that Desktop X can do many things, but I have never been able to utilize it. It frustrates the heck out of me. I am a diehard Nextstart user. It is easy to skin and customize and meshes well with other customizing programs.

I love the way NextStart offers me a desktop with the maximum amount of space. I'm not one of the hotshot users that work the real voodoo, but I like a small menu hotspot in the lower left, a pop-out alert tray under a small clock button, and my tasks (grouped, since I'm on 2K and not XP) high on the right side. Low key, and out of the way like I like it. That does seem a bit more than just skinning...

NextStart does everything I need. I incorporate it with WindowBlinds and Icon Packager and that'll do for me

I go through a lot of different applications as far as my desktop is concerned, but the one thing that has always been a constant is NextStart. The right click to get a menu in something that isn't bloated is a winner. And the level of customization- a horizontal bar at the top- or a start button anywhere on the screen. Add to that the possiblities that hotspots and internal commands that are not available in some of the options that have been put out... Yes, a lot more than skinning is available.

I guess to sum it up, with XP, I don't need as much as I did in 95, 98, or 2000. I don't really need another shell, nor anything to replace my desktop. Just a fast way to get to the applications that I use, and the functionality that I need for my everyday use. NextStart gives me all of that in spades.

I agree with wraith808 just a nice easy to use and quick access to my applications. It's one program I would not do without.

Object Bar and NextStart... I like NextStart allot and plan on getting it later on, but I think Object bar is easier to set up from what I read of NextStart.


I persoanally would run both... for different reasons. (NextStart for my desktop, Object Bar for my laptop and test computer)


Now all I need is to get the computers...

I, too, used Object Bar and Nextstart together for a long time, but I ended up using them both for the same purposes. I slowly got away from OB and use NS and most especially WorkShelf. Wouldn't compute without 'em. They both blend in very well with all of the other Stardock applications.
