Known issues

While we appreciate all feedback, please remember that we offer no official support for beta \ preview \ developer channel versions of Windows. If you report issues while in any of those early release channels, you should not expect them to be addressed unless it still exists in a retail version of Windows.

  • We are aware that very few clients are still seeing icon crowding issues in the Systray We still have not been able to reproduce it or understand the conditions that are causing it.  We will continue to monitor the issue in this thread.
    https://forums.stardock.com/516824/start11-systray-crowding

Please do not post about that issue here.

  • Start11 1.39.1 it is not designed for the latest insider preview build and we will have an update targeting that soon. Anyone who installs it on any preview builds of Windows will likely encounter taskbar issues that we will not be able to assist tih.

Start 11 app menu scrolling isn't fluid.

It's not a new issue, it's been the same since Start11 released. Like it's low FPS or something, idk. I tried to make a video to show what I mean. Playing at 0.5x makes it easier to spot, the difference between scrolling in start11 apps and original menu apps is noticeable.

I'm unable to update Start11 or Fences on my computer. I don't know if this is a Start11 issue, an Object Desktop issue, a licensing issue, or something else.

I just updated to Start11 Version 1.39.1 on my PC running Windows 11 Pro Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.1265). I am using the Windows 7 Style menu with the Windows 7 Style substyle. When I right-click on the Start Menu, on any item in the Start Menu, or on the Taskbar, the context menu displays with a black background. I first encountered this and reported it with Version 1.36.

My guess is that Start11 is now picking the background color based on the Default Windows Mode setting found in Settings > Personalization > Colors. As has been the case for some time, I have the overall Color Mode set to Custom and the Default Windows Mode set to Dark. For some reason, Microsoft requires those settings to enable the option to turn on Show Accent Color on Start and Taskbar. With those settings and Default App Mode set to Light, no other context menus show up with a black background.

I’d like to see Start11 display context menus for Start Menu items the way they were prior to Version 1.36, and as they were in Start 10, Start 8, and Windows 7 itself.

If the intent is to make a dark background an option, ideally it should be a configuration setting in Start11. Alternatively, if it is to be based on the Windows Personalization settings, it should only be put into effect if the overall Color Mode is set to Dark or the Default App Mode is set to Dark.

The software is working as you would expect on Windows 10/11.

The dark mode for system setting sets the taskbar and start menu and a few other things in dark mode.  There is also an option for apps which is different and does not impact the taskbar/start menu.

We are looking into if Win7 menus can be handled differently but right now they are tied to how we handle Win10/11 menus.

Uninstall, reboot, reinstall.

It sounds like some files were not replaced correctly.

What mouse do you have as some wheel mice have to be emulated to get smooth scrolling and others implement smooth scrolling at a native level.

Also what screen refresh rate do you have?

Thanks for the feedback. I would simply note that the Start11 software is not working on Windows 11 the same way it did from the time I upgraded from Start10 to Start11 on October 10, 2021 until the update to Version 1.36.

This was on a cooler master MM730, and a 165hz monitor. 144hz and 75hz monitors are pretty much the same.

I was curious about the mouse thing, so I tried with a couple other mices I have at home, a glorious model D, and a logitech G703, these 2 produce the same results. Maybe I got unlucky.

But given that it's also not great when using the mouse on the scrollbar, it feels more like a Start11 issue, I think.

Shot in the dark.... Have you tried rebuilding your file indexing? For me, when it comes to these little jitters i often find rebuilding the indexing works wonders. Everytime i update Start/fences i rebuild my index.

When setting a custom taskbar color to black, RGB(0,0,0), it gets set to gray rather than black.  Setting it to RGB(1,1,1) does work as expected.

Here's an odd bug that prevents a window from getting correctly added to task bar if you click during a window's launch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDYXtiJ03cs

After clicking yes to run, I click out in the empty white space, and then I can't get the setup window to display in the taskbar until switching to it via task manager.

The executable is K-lite code pack.

Search is still below the baseline standard of default Windows search in the ways pointed out in previous report threads and that issue I mentioned in the last two threads about UAC prompts on the taskbar being unclickable and an alt-tab being required persists.

After locking and unlocking windows, my taskbar icons get messed up.

First icon should be windows explorer, not god of war. Second one chrome, third one discord, etc.

Do you have the option to enhance the taskbar in Start11 enabled?

Its a light pink colour now, instead of being a pinky red. Not that I really care, but that still isnt a win11 colour?

Win11 22H2

I would have expected it to just alternate between light and dark - i.e. the colour of the chrome section:

No custom textures.

All,

Start11 1.4 Beta was released today.  Its lone update is for pending changes to the Windows taskbar.

Yes, I have it enabled because without it, sometimes, when I click a taskbar icon that has a group of opened windows behind, the window previews don't appear. That's probably another bug.

My windows build is 22621.1265 btw

The "Remove from this list" option in the context menu does what it says on the label, but it doesn't prevent the item from immediately returning to the list in its same position on its next run - in my case, it's the useless entry for the Xbox Game Bar, which happily launches itself behind many games. Please add an option to keep items off the list.
