Crash in Version 1.10

I'm playing version 1.10.3621123 on Test. The game crashed, and I submitted the crash report several hours before this post.

I think it crashed when I completed the Infinite Archive in Galactic Challenges. I'm sure it was going to be completed after I ended my turn.

I am playing with some mods I made. I don't think I did anything in them that would crash the game, but what do I know?

I have a save at the end of Turn 388 just before the crash that is available here.

Load the save. There is nothing to do, so go to the next turn. Respond to all the notifications, then the game will crash.

UPDATE

I have some new information.  After loading the save, one of the AI will have a trade offer.  Do what you want.  A ship will have moves left, so pass its moves.  Go to the next turn.  Another ship will have moves left, so pass its moves.  Eventually, the game will crash.

I also tried adding a project ahead of the Infinite Archive on my home planet so that it wouldn't finish and "cause the crash".  The game crashed anyway, so I guess it is something else.

Old-Spider,

I loaded your save just out of curiosity to see who you were playing as and how you were doing.  You have been around a long time and I respect the insights you have provided in many of your posts.

I can confirm that the game crashes after going to the next turn and responding to all of the prompts.

I have a few questions/comments about your game, not as criticisms, but as curiosity about how you approach playing the game:

  1. You have 7 unused Culture Points.  Do you intentionally not use them and, if so, why not?
  2. You have not assigned any leaders to any of the 4 available factions.  Why not?
  3. You appear to only use the ship designs the game provides and have not created any new designs.  Why not?
    1. the below screen snapshot shows the information for the "Battleship M7" which you have used to build a number of ships and it shows that it is only using 7 of the available 15 "Mass" slots.  You could design much more powerful ships using the other 8 slots.
  4. You have not built Military starbases near the 2 Subspace Gates to help your ships fight-off invaders.  Why not?  Do you not like using them for some reason?

Again, I am not being critical, I am just curious about your thinking and approach to playing the game.

Thank you in advance for your response.

PaulLach,

I just never have put in the effort to make use of all the features the game has.  Maybe I'm just lazy.  I am trying to make use of more of the features, but I still don't put that much effort into it.

Answers to your questions

1.  I don't use them too early because I'm never sure what to use them on.  As the game progresses, I sometimes do use them.  Other times I never get around to it.

2.  This is one of the features I've never bothered to investigate.  I have no other reason.

3.  I designed a lot of ships in GalCiv3 to make up for what I considered to be weak designs provided by the game.  I've always felt the designs in GalCiv4 were good enough for me, so I've rarely designed my own ships.  I didn't realize so many slots weren't being used, causing me to be using ships weaker than I could design.  I'll definitely have to pay more attention to this.

There is one problem.  I'm using a mod that "fixes" some problems with ship designs for the Onxy Hive so they will quit using ship parts that "allow" ship repair.  They aren't supposed to be able to use repair, so the parts are useless most of the time.  What's worse is that some of the parts actually do repair, which goes against the idea of the Promethion Born ability they have.  Maybe the mod is causing some of that.   I'll try to remember to check that the next game I play, when I will play as some other race and without the mod.

4.  I actually have a military base above the bottom-center path.  I put it there because the Arcean were sending so many ships that were finishing their turns near that area.  I was too busy building ships and trying to destroy all of theirs that I didn't get around to building more.

The Arcean have quit the game.  I'm sure some of it was due to my military efforts and some was due to my paying some other races to go to war with them.  I started the game with 20 total players.  I think there are only 13 now.

I have no problem with your questions.  I know everybody has a different way of playing, and GalCiv4 provides many different choices.  I've been trying the Galactic Challenges in this game to see if I can do better in the Prestige Victory area.  I was inspired by this post.

I especially appreciate question 3.  I think that may allow me to become much more powerful in future games.

Old-Spider,

Thank you for your responses.  I have played a LOT of games in GalCiv4 as different civilizations as well as my own custom civilization.  I have also experimented with all of the galaxy settings and I think the main reason I love playing this game is that there are so many different ways of playing and winning.

The following screen snapshot shows the settings I have been playing with for awhile and I have found that, with the techniques I have developed, I am able to win a Prestige victory in about 200 - 250 turns most of the time. I include all of the major civilizations except the Mimot as opponents.  I am going to wait until they are "fixed" before including them again.

Good hunting!
